I did not want to highjack MendieGK thread on Luke Glover but it got me thinking.

The other day I was on the practice green working on something I had seen.

I was working on a putt of about 25ft flattish to start with then very slightly downhill
to the hole.
My normal putting stroke is slow back with a longish follow through and the ball was
going about 5ft past.

I then changed to a longer backswing with a more controlled follow through both at the
same pace, this gave good results but seeing as I don't usually do this it would need more work.

Then I decided to do the pop putt I do believe its the stroke Snedeker uses.
Short back short through and the results were very very good.
It seems the faster the putt was the better the results, yet again this needs work but I believe
its the way im going to go.

Has anyone changed there stroke recently and does anyone do the pop putt?

No and no. There's a thread in Experts section about putt lagging and Snedeker's style was mentioned and shown. Personally, I think his stroke isn't one to copy but if it works...

Your original technique sounds fine to me. What was the issue exactly?

What's a "pop putt"?

Nothing major was wrong in fact im a fairly good putter.
However my main issue would be I like the ball to drop in the hole on the last roll so
I would say if it was anything I would be short of the hole.
I just feel theres room for improvement and like most things im always tinkering.

The pop putt is something my dad does and hes a very good putter.

Snedeker does it and in the Expert Section Jeff Ritter endorses it.
Look there and you will see.

The day I used it it was much more consistent.

I'm surprised your changing the way you putt Tony - i'd have said putting (and chipping) is a massive strength of your game.

However, Putting is safely the worst part of my game and to answer your question, yes, I have recently changed the way I putt from the 'Snedeker' style to simply feeling the pace of the putt with my arms and releasing a the putter head towards the hole with the stroke (not the hands) I dont think about the shoulders as I feel all robotic and horrid. It's a tip I read in a magazine (from Luke Donald I think)

I've changed as I do get handsy and struggle on fast greens. It not so much a slow move back and through, just a steady tempo and I try not to decellerate.

I haven't changed how I putt per say, but I have changed my grip.

I now use a split grip (See Natalie Gulbis as an example) and found both my line and pace have improved markedly.

The fact I have a 40" counterbalanced putter with a 17" grip lets me get my hands where I like.

My advice, given your handicap:
1. Don't tinker with it - especially with any kind of 'stabbing' stroke. It might have felt good that day but in the long run could ruin your game.
2. Don't try and get the ball to die in the hole. It's actually a bad habit and I have seen players doing it from 2 feet and missing! Get used to the fact that the correct pace will mean a miss going 18 inches past the hole (from any distance beyond 2 feet).

The thing is mate whilst I feel im ok at putting I believe I can be better.
It looks like your changing to go the other way.
I don't think it will hinder me long term I can always go back if need be,i suppose its just looking
for something different.
If it makes me a shot better per round that will be good.

Your 2nd point is crucial whatever stroke I end up with ive got to learn to get it past the hole.

last 3 years very bad putter- average over 40 putts per round.

34" too long so cut to 33" and changed grip to same grip I use for all other clubs (why do we change grip to use a putter?) and instantly felt better and 'practice' putting more solid.

Not been out yet doing this but looking forward to it as the h/cap committee bumped me up a whole stroke for this season based on scores.
