Honestly I wouldn't have a clue of how to play it effectively with my abilities... I could reach it with my 4h or a good 5i those shots would never stop on the green.

I think I would give up getting on the green in one, play a 160-170 yards 6 or 7 iron and then a safe -100+ pitch.

Or maybe it's better aiming for the green, hoping for a miracle and pitch from wherever the ball ends up.

If you hit a 4h or good 5 iron that far and are worried about stopping it on the green, why not take a strong 6 iron/weak 5 iron and play to land it short run it onto the green?

Unless it's over water or surrounded by cabbage?

Our 8th plays 220yds off the white tees, can play anything between a 3 wood and a 7 iron for me though many hit driver there. Prevailing wind is usually slightly against which makes it either a hybrid or a 4 iron

Have to do it every time I step onto the first tee at my place(off the whites)

Depends on conditions but it ranges from 3 wood to 4 iron for me.

Would never consider laying up on a par 3

I would select the club that I hit clsest to that distance, aim and fire, the same as any other par 3!
Obvious really!!"!!

Its been a while since I did maths, but I think hitting it 160-170, then a further 100+ will get you well past the flag on a 218 yard hole.

Depends what the hazards on near the hole. If reasonably open, long iron or hybrid and go for it. If tight, but some landing space short, hit a 5 or 6 iron and chip on.

Hit a 4 iron, miss the green

Chip through the other side of the green

Over compensate and under hit next chip

2 putts for a 5.

Bingo.

i can think of 2 locals clubs that both have a par3 of that distance, one is a 5i to the front as i can never hold the green with a 4i and always run through, the other is a 3w, both from slighly elevated tee's.

Don't you have a 5 wood?

Nope.

I was thinking of a hole with some deep stuff before the green. If it's all short cut I would surely go for a 6i and hope for a good kick and roll.

My 2nd is a 192 yds par 3 and is one of those I play best. It's either birdie or par each time. But that seems designed around my 5i swing, the green starts around 180 yds I guess.

Sorry, the minus (-) before the 100 meant under 100 yds and the + is a typo. Not clear on my side, apologies

You wouldn't like our 229 yard opener then with OB right and a pond left. Down wind I can get there with a 5 wood but into its a 3 wood. A lot of our guys hit whatever they can to leave a 40 yard pitch after the long rough stops.

I guess you need to see where the dange is short if you definitely can't make the green and then aim to clear/lay up accordingly. Most holes of this length don't have rubbish all the way to the green and so there is usually some sort of bale out area

On the same hole I play a driver into the wind or a 3 wood on a calm day. Both will happily land on the green but far more likely to land in the best place bunker in the world(as I call it).

I take it you cant run the ball to the green for some reason? bunker, uphill?

The 50 yards in front of the green are ankle tall grass. Anything hitting that will stop in less than half a metre. There's a dogleg bunker on left and back.

Our 14th is a par 3 222y of the whites with bunkers right and left of the green, if the faiways are dry i normally play a 4 or 5 iron with some run but at the moment the fairway is quite lush and grabs the ball so i've been hitting a 5 w to land on the green.

As posted in previous posts, we have 3 200+ yards par 3's at our course; 1st 228 yards, 8th 229 yards and 12th 243 yards.

On the 1st and 8th I usually use a 3 wood, although sometimes I do use a 4 iron and expect to be short and leave a chip on. Depending on the wind, I may use a driver on the 8th too.

Cant say Ive ever tried using a 5 iron to hit the ball nearly 230 yards!! Surely that cant be right, apart from the tour pro's and scratch-ish type players?

Might try my 3h on the 1st on Saturday, see what happens there, or maybe I will give the 5i a go and see what happens!! lol

It depends on what is around. If you can play out of bunkers and don't mind pitching out of rough, then crack straight at it.

If you don't like your chances, hit the club to land you short @ 190-ish.

I have to say I'm confused that a 4 or even 5 will get there whereas a 6 or 7 for 160 yards? 160 for me would be a 6, maybe 7 in the summer. 218 would be a 5 wood? :D

The problem I have on this hole is that I have to avoid the 50 yards before the green as there is:

1)tall grass ofen flooded
2)tarmac path
3)nice ditch at about 180 yrds

So if I lay up I normally play a medium-slow 6 or 7 depending on wind and weather. If instea I want to go for the green I use my 4 hydrid or in a good day a 5i but as I said in the OP I really need to put 100% swing and nail it perfect. Problem is I am not able to stop these two shots on the green.

I think I'll follow Bob's advice and try a 5w if I have a chance. Or buy one but I was saving for a v-easy...
