I was reading an article recently from Paul Casey who was saying that to have a powerful swing and be able to not lose grip on the club that this is best achieved with an interlocking grip and he has now changed to this.

I still use the overlapping grip and having tried interlocking on the range but have never been comfortable with this. My lad who has had lessons was taught interlocking.

What grip do you use and why?

I used to use the overlap grip, I did find that I lost a lot of swing speed though and sliced the ball more often than not.

One day at the range I decided to change and stick with an interlocking grip, it's worked wonders for me and i'm now sticking with it for good.

Overlap for me with a slight twist---overlap with one finger with the driver but overlap using two fingers with my irons.

The 2 finger overlap helps reduce the potential for hooking and pulling the ball.

I was taught the overlap varden grip, but soon ended up doing as you did with a two finger overlap, however I realised due to the shortness of my fingers that the interlocking grip was better for me, gave a more stable base for my swing.

So for me Interlocking

After playing for 8 months and emerging myself fully in the world of golf I thought I knew most things and swing mechanics but.. I had no idea that there was these different grips! I thought it was only with putter that the grip varied until I read this thread!

Just googled the various grips. In my first lesson I was taught 'baseball' and that was it, I thought this was the grip everyones uses. I have tiny hands so I'll give interlocking a go, though its probably to late to change now. Thanks, still learning from you guys clearly!

Always interlocked since the age of 8

If its good enough for Tiger then its good enough for me!!

Same reply i give everytime I get asked this question.

I have a strong (3 knuckles) interlock. I interlock because its how my old man taught me and what I have always known.

Overlapping feels like playing football with your boots untied!

Have used all 3!!

Started with baseball as it felt comfortable, then progressed through to overlapping then interlocking. Played my best golf with interlocking. It did feel weird getting used to it. I ended up walking to work holding an umbrella with interlocking grip to get used to it quicker!!! Strange i know, but we do these things lol

i think it helps you relax your hands on the club and not grip too tightly, which in turn could steer the club.

Please correct me if this is wrong

I think the function of both overlapping and interlocking is to keep the hands connected.
There are obviously various degrees of interlocking - I thought only one until TonyN's post!
I only interlock the little fingers, and yes it does feel weird initially. I tried the baseball grip for a time but I never knew where my hands were in relation to each other as they could rotate independently.
Where it helps to relax the hands and not grip too tightly, is that if you do you'll end up with bruised/sore little fingers! At least, I do.
