I was playing with a friend of mine in the second round of a comp when we got to the 17th which is a tricky 175 yard par 3. I hit a 4 iron easy swing into the wind caught the right hand side of the green and ran off. Will, my playing partner said he always struggles with this hole and bought a 25 degree hybrid for it, specifically for this hole, and he was going to show me why.
His strike was one of those one in a million (for us mortals) , now it is a blind hole for the majority of pin placements and on approaching the green and seeing no sign of the ball. I sent him to look in the bunker to the left of the pin, he sais was I that far left? whilst I went to the hole which having noticed he had not gone big was the only place it could be.
I asked what ball he was playing as the ball was in the bottom of the cup, he thought I was winding him up but when he came over several hugs and handshakes and photos later I played out (and got my 3 canning a long putt). There was no one behind us as we had set off at 4-45 playing on a windy and wet Sunday which was the second round of a two day comp( just before anyone went on about slow play!!).
He then smashed two balls out of bounds and managed to get the third in but and this is the question 'how do you cope and control the emotions'.
I was so excited for him and although I managed to smash a drive the second shot was terrible with my pitching wedge which I am usually reasonably consistent with, hitting a shot whilst grinning from ear to ear is not recommended.
Surely it cannot be as simple as a couple of deep breaths and get on with it!!
It could not have happened to a nicer guy as well we joked about the bottle behind the bar and as he is tee total what about a lemonade!
Hit em straight ....ish:
