How do you cope with a hole in 1

I was playing with a friend of mine in the second round of a comp when we got to the 17th which is a tricky 175 yard par 3. I hit a 4 iron easy swing into the wind caught the right hand side of the green and ran off. Will, my playing partner said he always struggles with this hole and bought a 25 degree hybrid for it, specifically for this hole, and he was going to show me why.
His strike was one of those one in a million (for us mortals) , now it is a blind hole for the majority of pin placements and on approaching the green and seeing no sign of the ball. I sent him to look in the bunker to the left of the pin, he sais was I that far left? whilst I went to the hole which having noticed he had not gone big was the only place it could be.
I asked what ball he was playing as the ball was in the bottom of the cup, he thought I was winding him up but when he came over several hugs and handshakes and photos later I played out (and got my 3 canning a long putt). There was no one behind us as we had set off at 4-45 playing on a windy and wet Sunday which was the second round of a two day comp( just before anyone went on about slow play!!).
He then smashed two balls out of bounds and managed to get the third in but and this is the question 'how do you cope and control the emotions'.

I was so excited for him and although I managed to smash a drive the second shot was terrible with my pitching wedge which I am usually reasonably consistent with, hitting a shot whilst grinning from ear to ear is not recommended.

Surely it cannot be as simple as a couple of deep breaths and get on with it!!

It could not have happened to a nicer guy as well we joked about the bottle behind the bar and as he is tee total what about a lemonade!

Hit em straight ....ish:

Only had this discussion yesterday , im not one for honours on tee boxes so if your ready. play ,
"i use to say jokingly play away unless i get a hole in 1 if i do get as far away from the tee box as you can"

one of the guys said the best thing after a HIO is to slow down and possibly play last off the next tee , ive only ever had one , i was 2 over at the time and was happier i was back to level par than the actual HIO , i did enjoy telling people for the next year or so tho ha .

Wouldn't know. Never had one. Never really came that close. I'm just not that good

Getting a hole in one isn't always about how good you are etc - A 24 handicapper at our place got one last Sunday ( another new watch ) .

It's just one good swing with one good connection

Only ever had one and was on a windy evening having 9 holes on my own. I was ecstatic but almost didn't really believe it. Was on the 8th at our place, played the 9th (got a bogey 5) went in to the bar and not a soul there. All a bit of an anticlimax really :)

Got my first (I've had 2, seen neither!) on the 13th at Longniddry - a slightly thinned 7i. Searched for it in the long grass at the back of the green first!

That put me 3 up and I didn't win another hole - but hung on to win 1 up.

I've seen 2 get canned - though 1 was a Provisional! The other was another miscue that hit a road, bounced on a down-slope 5 or more yards offline, ran up the slope to the green and dutifully (to much mirth) fell in!

I holed a 5 iron second shot on the second at Longniddry in their Pro Am [foursomes].
Walking to the 3rd tee my amateur partner gave me a good talking too about keeping the 'heid' and getting on with it.
I was just a nipper then and his advice was good.

Foxy...Great hole for a hole in one. One of my favourites

As posted last week I hit a nice HIO , 1st ever ,TBH I just wanted to go home.
I hit the buffer which felt an anti climax as it was on our 3rd, a long way to go when your giddy!

What is nice and the link I tried to post ,is i'm the latest addition on our hall of fame.

I've had 4, so tbh you just walk on to the next like nothing happened. We are insured through our membership for a tab up to £200, so most times you are covered for the big bill. Do it in the spring meeting though, and you'd better have your running shoes primed and ready to go.

One of our members has had 17, I think. I was playing with him a few years ago when he had his 14th, and he really was less than impressed. He has a dreadful swing too. Short and jabby gets it done though.

I hit one in a corporate day at Wigan golf club a few years ago! It was a thinned 9 iron that caught the fringe which slowed it down and it rolled in!

Nice 4 points and I did go on to win the stableford but as with most HIO, it was a lucky shot so no elation and no silly bar bill!

A perfect 250+ drive down the middle, a second shot to the heart of the green and a well judged put to hole a birdie on the first in last weeks medal meant more to me than a flukey hole in one!

I got very excited at my 1st one but carried on playing quite well, the next couple were not as exciting and my last one I just shook hands and moved onto the next hole, mind you my golfing mindset was seriously waning by then, I have now ceased playing altogether.

Steve come back man, have a break, but really hope the bug bites you again

New golf thinking would have you file that career shot in your memory bank and pull it out again at every par 3.
But agree the adrenalin flowing would mean that the next few holes are a challenge

Only had one.... so far. It took me 41yrs to get it. A lovely 4 iron into a stiff breeze, 160yds - 1st hole. I leapt up and down like a mad man. It was a team of 3, best 2 from 3 scores stableford. Don't think we won but we were well into the money. I finished under h'cap.

Sadly I've never had one however we were playing a club match the other week and found ourselves 2 down with 2 matches still out on the course. I won the 4th of the matches and the final guy in our group won the 5th to tie the match at 2-2. His win in the 5th match was courtesy of a hole in one on the 17th and as he was the final pairing it meant he was also the one to go down the 19th in the playoff.

Sadly he was so excited his golf suffered on the extra hole and we lost!
