How Do I Improve at Green Reading?

I am very sceptical about aimpoint but just googled how much slope there is on a 1 degree slope over 30cm (width of feet when checking). It is 5.24 mm and I'm still not convinced you can feel this difference. Put together with the fact you are potentially walking all over your own putting line, I will not be converting.

It’s only a guide anyway. Length of grass, grain of grass, damp or dry. How does Aimpoint work with uphill/downhill cross slopes? It may well help but I don’t see it as a short cut to judgement based on practice & experience.

40 years ago I was a shockingly bad putter for single figures. I put hours in almost every day for months. It was hours & hours of practice that made the difference.

Did a quick check as well if you are standing with your feet 2 feet apart...

The height difference between your feet is 6 mm (0.6 cm, or roughly 1/4 inch).

The Math​

A 1% slope means a 1 unit rise for every 100 units of horizontal distance (a slope angle of approximately 0.57°):

Height Difference = 60cm x 0.01 = 0.6cm = 6mm
Because the angle is so small, whether the 60 cm is measured horizontally or along the slope, the difference rounds to 6 mm. In golf, feeling a 6 mm elevation change between your left and right foot is why subtle 1% slopes can be surprisingly tricky to detect without practice.

If you practice it enough you can definitely feel the slight weight shift somewhere on your body.

Aimpoint isn't for everyone (and I understand all the scepticism around it) but if you struggle to read greens with your eyes then it's worth a bash. Gemini has this to say about a 1% slope from 6 foot. Seems to move a decent bit...

Key Factors That Change the Break​


Green Speed (Stimp Rating)
  • Stimp 8–9 (slower green): approx 3 inches of break.
  • Stimp 10–11 (average to fast green): approx 4 inches of break.
  • Stimp 12+ (tour-fast green): approx 5 to 5.5 inches of break.
Pace / Entry Speed
  • "Die in the hole" pace: The ball travels slower and stays on the green longer, increasing gravity's effect to approx 4.5 to 5 inches of break.
  • Firm pace (2–3 ft past the hole): The higher velocity reduces gravity's deflection time, cutting the break down to approx 2.5 to 3 inches.

I don’t diss Aimpoint, I just don’t think it’s the great messiah. Occasionally, I use the ‘which foot is the weight on’ for those subtle slopes.

I’ve not played on too many really grainy greens - maybe I have but just didn’t realise - but does that formula in the last part of your post work on very grainy greens, and if yes how does it compute for down grain v across the grain?
 
I heard that if you can’t feel the weight difference in your feet try lifting each one in turn a little bit, the one that is easier to lift is up the hill and vice versa. Seems to make sense but I’m not an aimpointer.

No idea as I can only think of one course locally (Close House) that I felt the grain affected my putts, they always seem to break more than you think and are much faster downhill than uphill even on a tiny slope. I've never played golf abroad so I'm only used to the greens in the UK and I don't think many are Bermuda. According to Gemini then yes, the grain can amplify or cancel out the break on a slight 1% slope.

Grass Type Matters​

I'm definitely in the "not taking enough time to read from multiple angles" camp, so do have the odd one that looks dreadful because I didn't take my time to check a high or low side.
I also have a tendency (particularly at the moment with the faster greens) to over read shorter putts and miss them on the high side, expecting them to break more. Need to aim more at the hole & hit it with pace (or so my playing partners always say)
 
All this talk of reading putts, are we guilty of expecting to hole too many putts? The stats from the pro tour show they aren't as good as we think at putting so why do we think we should be holing more?

Who said anything about holing? This is more about getting closer from distance so I don't three-putt. If I misread a putt it can leave me 5 or 6 feet for my second putt which is missable. My three-putt avoidance would be so much better if I could get these lag putts within 3 feet more often.

I took it that holing putts might be the overall objective of putting :ROFLMAO:

Maybe because unlike the rest of the bag, the overwhelming majority of us already have all the brain power, physical attributes and athleticism required to be the best putter in the world
I’m for sure not there yet but top half anyway :p
 
What I take from this thread is that the OP is and always has been a much worse than average green reader. I also understand that he has been a slicing driver whose chipping is also below average.

He also mentions that his course is tight with large sloping greens and relatively short.

He plays better away courses that are longer, wider with flatter greens.

However he also says that his course is incorrectly related (too low) and as such his handicap is too high.

If the major tests of your course coincide with where your skills are below average and the elements where you are above average are not tested as much, I don’t think that the course rating of the home course is that far out.

Note Course Ratings are based upon the model scratch and the model bogey golfer so that they can be as consistent as possible across courses. The further away you are from the model player in various elements of your game the more some courses will suit you and the more others won’t dependent on their characteristics.

Ori. Just to be clear, what is your actual problem? Reading and/or putting the right line, reading and/or putting the right length, or all?
