was wondering how did/do you add distance to your game? have u gone for personal fitness i.e got stronger etc or have you changed equipment? if so how much has it added to your game?

I cant comment particularly, as I have never set out to 'increase distance' in any particular way, but I suspect that 'core' strength is the thing to work on, together with flexibility etc etc.

Having said that, a lot of 'distance' is purely to do with timing, ie lag of wrist at impact etc, as I have a pretty rhythmic swing, not fast at all, yet I've never struggled for distance particularly.

Some of the younger lads at our place try and hit the cover off it, and whilst they can be very long, they can be very wayward, but such is the impetuosity of youth perhaps.

At 48, and not 'particularly' fit, if I can send it out 190yds with a 4iron, easy swing, it shouldnt need 'gym' work from anyone to do the same, merely some practise in striking the ball well.

Anyways, I cant be arsed with gym these days.......lol

Width is key to distance. Making sure you get a good shoulder turn. I don't really think gym work is going to make a significant difference by comparison to a good swing.

Perhaps some flexibility work: stretching, yoga, pilates might help?

what is the difference between compact and width~? ive been told i have a compact swing and that it was a good thing. I wonder if that might cause a lack of width for me. hmmm

As for the comment of gym work wont a a significant difference i think i dont totally agree with this. All the top player work hard in the gym to maintain strength and fitness. I think this makes a significant contribution to their game. just my 2pence but im beggining to think that good fitness is like an extra club in the bag sort of speak

I changed from a Srixon Z Star to a harder ball. The lower spin rate gives me another 20+ yards. OK i have to adjust around the greens for the harder feel but I am playing at least 1 club less into the green. As i play a tree lined course the less spin also stops me leaking drives into the trees as much. Handicap is down from 13 to 11 so I guess it works for me

Never really looked for extra distance even though I probably only get it 240 yards on average with the big dog. I'd rather 240 and able to find/play the second than 280 in the thick rough or trees. My swing is unique and not helping add any distance and is going in for a major overhaul this winter so who knows, 245 average next year perhaps

Core strength and create lag in the hips. Don't ask me how but if you look at the kids who play in our scratch team they are all about 6 stone wet through so its not just about strenght. The pro always talks about power through the hips. If you really want to improve lessons with your pro are the way to go !

Turn against a solid base with a flexed right knee, have an imaginary pause at the top, start back down with the body and give it a late hit.

Longest drive at a corporate day on Wednesday, a nice gentle draw which ended up out about 290 yards, so I can hit the odd long one.

it isnt something I have ever worried about, I hit the ball as long as I need too, and it is long enough for me.
I would say that if you can swing in balance and get the ball out of the middle of the club face, more often, instead of maybe the toe/heal area, then it will add yards because of the better contact.

Take more club! :D

I'm not desperately long off the tee with my driver, but I was always short of the green with my approach shots. Rather than trying to hit my irons to their max, I have learnt to take more club and swing easier.

Always 'clipped' my irons away until this year, but as I was struggling to hit anything over an 8 iron anyway I decided a complete change was in order. Now try to take ball then divot with same swing speed / effort as before and I get 15 yards extra carry :D

I just write posts that say I hit it 30yds longer than I do. ;)

I like this one! haha I have gained a bit of distance going from stiff S300 shafts to pro-x6.5. GIven me a lot better ball flight and ive gained a club possibly more with my irons. No more ballooning ball flights!
