To winning, or getting a prize etc....

Monday past there i entered and open competition at a course i've only played once 3 years ago, so couldn't remember many of the holes, it was windy, it was a parkland (i play links) and i was a little nervous because i got drawn in with the club president and his 2 mates. So in the end, didn't play the best, my putting was on form but the rest was so so, and i scored 36 points, with 4 blobs. Wednesday rolls around and i get the local paper, all sporting results in the area are always in it, and low and behold, there was the winner a grammar school kid playing off 5, wins with 40 points, so i was 4 points off.

I know i could have won thinking back on some of the lip outs, and putts that stopped hovering over the hole, that might have gone in.

how close have you been?

I scored 37 points in Wednesday's St George's comp but I'm yet to see the final leaderboard... I would hope top 3 but there's bound to be three 24 handicappers with 40+ points above me

Too many to mention but to be honest but there's no point dwelling on the ifs and buts as it's the "dids" that count and everyone could look back over a round and find something that could have improved their score. I bet if you ask your 5 handicapper he'll tell you he could have had 42 points.

I have won about five or six biggish competitions, scored a gross 60 and broke two course records.
I could not tell you too much about those rounds.
I also lost two events I should have won and I could tell you quite a bit about those rounds.

That's golf.

We have four match play KO comps each year. The main two are the handicap singles and 4'somes. The other 2 have an 18 hole medal qualifier and the top 16 then play match play KO. One is scratch and one is handicap. I have been in a total of 10 finals and only won 4 of them. I have the misfortune to have lost each final at least once.

Already had 2 second places in medals this year.

That's pretty decent Doon. A couple of course records is decent shooting in anybodys book. It's funny that the mind usually remembers the ones that got away though.

Me? I've only played the one medal so far and never even troubled the 2nd from last competitor. :)

Plenty of times. Sometimes to rue the odd one you left out there that cost you and other times you hold your hands up and applaud the guy who had one of those days and won fair and square. I played the annual bogey event at my club two years ago. Came in with +2 and +5 which would have won six out of the previous seven years. Guy turns up with +1 and +9 to blow me out of the water. What can you do but say well played
