House external render/paint question

The external bricks used in our house are cheap & cheerful 60s ugly look bricks. So we are thinking of rendering/painting over them. While we like render, it might be cheaper to paint over. Was talking to our builder yesterday - and he mentioned that we need to be aware that external render and paint work will require maintenance unlike bricks. I had not factored for external paint every few years.

We have only ever lived in houses with external brickwork or in tower blocks. Any forumers having houses with external renders/paints share what choosing such an option would involve..

the top portion of my gaff is rendered, moved in from new 8 years ago and its looking a bit tired and could do with a paint. but its on a side of the house that gets very little sun, so i think this has shortened the life of the finish somewhat.

You can get colored render that shouldn't ever require painting. do you not watch grand designs?!!
