Honesty, is it overated in golfing terms

As we all know golf is a game where you are expected to police yourself and as such we assume that everyone who plays this wonderful game is honest.

If you were to discover that someone was not entirely honest in their every day life would this effect whether you would want to play golf with them?

I would likely play golf with them but I would be keeeping a close eye on them!

Mmmm

Say they claim to be unable to play golf for some reason and then you discover they have played and when challenged come up with all sorts of reasons why you are wrong, even when confronted with overwhelming evidence. Just say.

Does their dishonesty mean you might question that persons veracity elsewhere?

Interesting idea/post. Having played at a club where there was no shortage of dodgy geezers, I guess it would be hypocritical to say I wouldn't play with certain folk.
Truth be told, those same blokes who had a different view on life to me were also people that I would have trusted 100% to protect their own. I'd have lent them money, let them borrow my car/clubs/whatever without worry....this is more than I can say for some of the supposedly upstanding citizens I come across from day to day.

Club rules mean that when convicted he will be banned. I think thats a bit OTT, but hey thats me.

Question is on the basis he is a crook, does it mean he is crooked on the course (to be clear he was the most honest person i ever met on the course)

TBH I would trust the criminals/villains I know more than most "straight" people I know.

I know a couple who are so straight-laced and prim and proper it is unbelievable, yet if they were given the wrong change, undercharged for something or got something free they shouldnt, they will grab it as quick as possible and make a rapid exit before the mistake is realised.

Also the couple I mentioned are judgemental and look down their nose at people quite a lot too.

I know who I would rather spend time with on a course.

I am the most honest person I know, The only thing is that I know Ive taken advantage of situations (away from the course and not of any monetary worth) where maybe honesty was a policy, not necessarily the best one though. Im sure everyone has to some extent taken advantage of situations though.
I would trust most folks until shown reason not to.

As long as they don't drop a ball down their trouser leg in the rough,pinch an inch on from their ball marker or improve their lie in any way I couldn't care less what anyone I play with for a few hours on the course gets up to in private. As long as I don't know I don't care.

Therein lies the problem.......Golf will always have cheats at club level simply because there are dishonest people about.....Its like players pulling from there handicap.....instead of playing off high singles there pulling and playing off mid to high teens. And there always in the prizes........How do you combat this?
For honest John he just keeps getting screwed......

I've read threads on here about golfers who will deliberately play badly over the last few holes to protect their handicap if they are not in contention for a prize. Are these the kind of people who would cheat in other ways on the course?

There is a simple solution to cure all cheating in all sports: announce a new government initiative costing £lots and featuring a new independent watchdog ("OffCheat") to promote cheating.

This new quango must ensure that those exhibiting honesty and sportsmanship are exposed to the same amount of dirty, underhand tactics as those with the morals of a sewer rat.

Hey, we've still got a raft of former bank execs like Sir Fred on the dole, they could head up OffCheat for about £750k per year. Each.

That would kill cheating stone dead...
