Having recently read Chrisd's thread about the new Callaway X2 Hot irons, and being in the market for some new lighter shafted irons myself (due to my ongoing elbow problem), I thought I'd check out these bad boys today at Clarke's Golf in Rainford.

HOOOOLLLYY HECK, these things are long.. Yes, they are strong lofts, and the shafts (stock 85gm) are long, but these are just so easy to hit as well. I compared them directly to my Orkas and Cobras, and these were at least a club and a half longer. I usually use my 6 iron for 165-170 yard shots, these were sailing towards the 175 yard marker with ease (with range balls ).

They also had a much better ball flight than I expected. Having recently tried some Ping I25's, I was put off by the higher than usual ball flight. These were much more similar to the ball flight that I prefer.

So, I'm booked in for a fitting on Thursday. I'm going to compare these cannons, to some other GI offerings including the Speedblades, JPX EZ and also the X2 Pros... I'm sick of having lovely looking clubs that cost me shots.. I'm gonna get some ugly mofo's and shave off the final few shots to Cat 1..:D

They are a club and a half stronger lofted than your orka irons so sounds about right. YOur Orka 6 iron is 32 degrees, in the X2 Hot its 26 degrees

I never thought you would fall for all that guff

You've got your handicap down to 6 so now your buying more user friendly clubs :D

Yesterdays round was interesting. Yes, they do go long but the, say 7 iron still, for me, goes 7 iron height as do the other clubs for their respective number. I find that a nice easy swing sends them off with a gentle draw and the way that they pick up height is awesome. I hit a couple of poor strikes and they still flew - not as far as they would have off a centred strike but much better than the AP 2's would off a poor strike. I did get slightly blocked out by a tree yesterday and tried a big fade round it with a 5 iron - no problem at all and nearly on the green on a par 5 as a result !!

They look chunky in the bag but when sitting behind the ball they do look pretty ok and not really game improver'ish. I am sure that they are going to save me a shot or two round the course and if they do its a worthwhile change.

I hope you feel the same when you've tested them Bluewolf

its a mind coach you need to get you to Cat1, not new clubs, its easy:rofl:

I tried a mind coach but he ended up looking like Herbert Lom in the later Pink Panther films..

It wasn't just the additional distance though, they are so easy to hit and don't balloon like some of the other GI irons I've looked at.. Now that I'm having to restrict my swing to protect the elbow, I need the additional firepower to maintain some of my distances...

Now if only I could putt......;)

I know this may be a stupid question but!!!

Why don't you just take a longer club? cheaper than buying a new set.

I hate to state the obvious mate, but aren't you the guy with the Ping shovels in his bag? At least I drew the line at them..;)

I've been trying that this past few rounds, but I end up just half swinging and then trying to knock the skin off the ball.. The other problem is the weight of the club.. I dropped the Cobras after they ripped all the tendons in my right arm (not really their fault, but I hold grudges and the weight with the DG S300's is causing me all sorts of problems.)
The Orka's are great, but the ball flight with the Dynalite shafts is way too high for me (I do love the heads though). The Callaways have a surprisingly low ball flight (even when comparing 6 iron with 5 iron)..
I haven't fully decided yet though.. I'm trying a few on the Flightscope on Thursday and comparing them with mine to see how the figures stack up. I could do with a bit more distance, but it's not the major factor. If the dispersion and spin aren't right, then I'm sticking with what I've got..

Saving it for the proper qualifiers my friend :D (I hope  )

The weather put me off that day

Best thing about that day was the Old Dear who approached me and asked "Excuse me, do you have Wolf written on your balls?", or when I was stood with Andy while you were in "that" bunker and I turned to him and said "I think we're about to meet the sweary Birchy..." :D

Maybe that bunker is haunted by an old glaswegian, seadog?

Gary-from-sweary was in my group at Frodsham. Ye gods, effing and jeffing everywhere he was, I hope he said a few hail marys that night.

Not had the pleasure of sweary Gary yet, but played with sweary Birchy at Moor Allerton. I love it when he turns up, it's like Golf mixed with a Richard Prior gig.
