Evening all!

is it normal for a club to spike and sand the greens twice within 6 weeks?

our greens had just heeled up nicely and now they have gone and done it again! is this normal if so whats the reasoning behind it?

I've always thought this is a waste of time because all you're doing is removing what you put in last time. Our greenkeeper agrees and does a combination of solid tining, verticutting & top dressing, with the result that our greens are already top class.

Not usual, in my own experience. Why not email the club and ask the question. They must have a valid reason (poor root growth, illness/infestation). We normally have ours done twice a year, March and late September (from memory) but it seems a funny thing to do so near the start of peak golfing

I will have a chin wag with our pro next time i am in the shop I am still one of the newest members so dont want to be seen as rocking the boat!

I can think of valid reasons; but most would only be substitutes for more aggressive treatments that they have decided not to pursue! Basically a program to reduce the organic matter in the upper layers of the greens and replace it with sand.

However this sort of approach/work is remedial rather than maintenance so 'usual' isn't relevant.

It's when nothing gets done that you should really worry!

I'd probably speak to the green staff instead...probably have more of an idea!

Indeed! Asking the Pro Green-Keeping questions is normally as pointless as asking him about Rules issues!

Ask the Green Staff!

But it's not usual in my experience.

I have heard of different treatments that use similar hollow coring activity - to break up clay as well as the 'usual core extraction' for example.

Our greens have been hollow tined twice already this year, and one green had four inch tines taken out to a depth of 6ft on one section to try and help with a few drainage issues.

Our greens were tined and sanded last week, after playing on the greens at The Grove on Tuesday, playing on my courses greens on Saturday was chalk and cheese. The Groves being brilliant and my courses greens were terrible, bobbly and beach like. Hopefully this rain were getting now will wash the sand into the holes and sort the greens out.

There must be a perceived real problem with the greens if they have been hollow tined twice so close together. Count yourself lucky your club can afford to do this. Top dressing ain't cheap. You'll see a huge improvement in the green in a few weeks.

Our greens are still terrible, a combination of finely rolled mud and poor greenkeeping means we will probably be ready for the season in June.

I don't get bothered by work being done to the greens. yes ill have a grumble when I spot it but they don't do this work to ruin peoples enjoyment.

Ours were a real mess after winter and have been hollow tined twice already. They are now playing really well, which considering the wet winter we had and the fact that we played on them all winter, suggests that the club were right to do so.

Hollow tining is removing cores and filling with sand, solid tining is spiking and filling with sand , to help drainage. According to our greenkeeper.
