Hollotined and Sanded?

Just a quick question - the greens at my local club have just been hollotined and sanded. This has been done just over a week before the start of the 'real' golf season (the first summer competition at the club). But what exactly does this process do to the greens, and how quickly would anyone guestimate the procedure take to clear up?

I'm assuming that the hollotining allows greater infiltration, so the greens are able to increase moisture allowing more growth, but what is the purpose of the sand?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

It's one of several tasks that should be done early and late in the season. It will allow greater airflow into the root are off the grass and properly topdressed it should help the greens form getting compacted over a period of time.

Once the growth starts it should fill out quite quickly.

The holes allow air and moisture to get to the roots, alleviates compaction (which is not good for the grass) and provides 'space' for the roots to grow into and therefore get more/thicker grass coverage....

The sand fills the holes and provides a better make up of soil for moisture to pass through and into allow the grass to grow better...

Ideally you would do it much as possible but those golfers get in the way so 2 weeks of pain twice a year makes the other 48 more enjoyable...if if didn't get done you would notice very quickly...

The more you can top dress (even without the tining) the better quality greens you will get over time....

Thanks for the answers, and lets hope that it works well for some rapid summer greens.

On a side note, would it work to do the same process to the winter greens during the summer months?

My club has done this but on every green and is doing my head in they havnt filled the holes with sand so the ball takes 60,000,000 bobbles lol :D

You still managed to shoot 8 under so i would'nt worry too much.

It is a necessary evil Im afraid.

So many people at gillingham used to moan about the "effing crap green" and then when work is done to do something, they moan even more.

BTW the greens werent lousy, just another excuse for lousy golfers to use for their appalling putting.
