why do the pros/other golfers hold up their putter like a pendulum? seen this quite often, but never known why. even tried it, but didnt really see what it was for!haha.
any one do this and why?

If you can find a way of holding it so it hangs dead vertical (next to impossible with most putters), then that gives you a reference. If you then look at the line of your putt, you can see whether it is horizontal (with practice).

If you line the shaft up with you ball, if the hole appears to the right, the putt breaks that way, and vice versa.

Personally, I find it slow, and cobblers.

A guy I used to play with does it on every single shot. He has been a member of the course for 50 years.

I don't play with him anymore.

Plumb-bobbing ... I tried it for a while and it seemed to help. I am atrocious at reading lines... like even struggling to tell if its going to break left or right, never mind how much. I might give it another go.

Good explanation Murph,im going to try this the weekend.
It will get right up my playing partners nose, they think im slow enough anyway.

i went for a putting lesson with a local pro holded same way as him ever since he had some special lesson with i bloke in southport, played in an alliance game against him few months ago and he is holding it totally differnt now, told him 15 quid i paid for mine

It should work - if you allow the putter to hang naturally and accept that it will always hang with the heaviest bit down like a plumb bob hence the term. Whether or not you are standing on a flat piece of ground is irrelevant - I was always told you should never assume anything in life - especially in golf :)

I should add I don't like or use this method but the theory should work.

i played with an old guy who did this on every green but only from the point of were his ball was,i can normally see the break/borrow and look at the hole from both sides and walk to the hole to feel any slope or dip,how can standing in one spot waving a putter around like errol flynn help anyone, don't forget the pros have books done by the caddies on the greens and another pair of eyes to help them for them i think it is just a reassurance.
