Holding the club at the top of the follow through on finish.

You see most pro's doing this...is it a product of a great swing, or is it pure aesthetics and they are using strength to keep the club behind their neck?

Up till recently there was no chance of me doing it, I would swing through and then bring the club back, bouncing off my left shoulder to almost pointing at the target..but since I've had a few lessons (mainly the take away, and more up right), when I hit a really good shot, the club almost just stays there now, so is my swing on a better plane...or am I being a tool and thinking I'm Rory and subconsciously holding it when I hit a good one? :)

In my view its a product of a healthy swing. Most golfers don't use there hips in the swing and simply flip the arms across their body. If you use your hips in the correct way, you ultimately end up in the "pro" finish comfortably.

I find when I complete my swing and finish my follow through I'm hitting the ball nicely. I tend to get a bit jabby and pully and I think that's a product of not moving my lower body properly. When everythings moving nicely and I'm swinging well I end in a nice finishing position naturally.

If you have have hit a sweet shot, right out of the middle, kept your balance, lovely trajectory etc then somehow you seem to be left in that position. It is fairly rare that I get it all right like that so I am beggared if I'm going to move in a hurry. I generally thing if you are there naturally after hitting a shot then you have probably done something right so enjoy it.

Well, it only happened on 1 drive in the comp on Sunday, but it was by far and away one of the best drives I've ever done, smooth swing, balanced and ball went long and straight. Must be lovely hitting shots like that all the time!

Slight thread drift but I was watching a tournament on Sky a while back, Padraig harrington was playing against two Americans, can't remember who. The players were mic'd up and there was a bit of banter going round, with the two yanks ganging up on Padraig a bit. One of the par 3's Paraig hit it to about a foot, and stood there in his finish position admiring it (as you do when you're that good). One of the Americans says' great shot Padraig, and a great pose too', quick as a flash Padraig replys, 'Tanks, you'll be seeing it again...'

I hold it there too if I've hit a nice sweet balanced shot so that any photographers nearby have plenty of time to capture the pose. It happens about once per round, and so far, I've not seen any photographers.

This, a good balanced finished lets me know I've swung well, build faith in the swing I've turned up with that day.

Spot on Baz. I had a lesson once when I used to swing too aggressively and the pro got me into the finish pose position and then do a reverse swing finishing at the top of the swing - this was simply to show me what a good, balanced finish felt like and we must have repeated it 20 times. It smoothed out my swing in no time and was the start of my much improved golf changes

I often will have a picture in my mind (my avatar pic) when I approach playing a shot - that of Hogan from behind - completing his shot - lovely balanced finish. I was once told or read that a nice finish can only come about as a result of a good swing. So I tell my mind that I want to finish like that and will sometimes put in a practice loosener through to that finish. And with that thought in mind I will often execute a good swing.

Absolutely SILH, my pro got me to hold the balanced finish until the ball landed. On e good ones, it was easy, on the bad ones I wobbled all over the place. A balanced finish is usually the product of a good swing

The follow through is part of the swing, which collects the ball on the way through. If you can't hold a balanced finish, then you have probably tried to hit at the ball, rather than through it, which can cause all sorts of problems.

Someone mentioned hips earlier in the thread...and that's a key for me it seems. In my lesson last night, I wasn't bringing my right hip through square, so not getting the finish being talked about here. When I made more of an effort to bring the hips square to target at the end, its more balanced, better finish and much better shot.

If I can get into the position to hold for the "photo pose" I know my tempo and swing are in great shape. It doesn't happen as much as it should. No surprise that I hit some good shots and hold the pose and not so when I can't get into pose. Clearly a sign of poor balance caused by something distinctly wonky

It is a well known fact that you are only able to hold the finish when you have the wrong club in your hand.

Holding tHe pose as you come up 10yds short :(

This was something that I was working on at my last lesson - making a purpose of completing the swing through to a solid well balanced finish.
Often, as others have commented, it is a sign that everything before it in the swing has worked well and in harmony.
