Lee Trevino talks about Holders versus Flippers with regards to releasing the club.

Can anyone illustrate or describe what he means?

He says that all the great players were holders, and it is the club amateurs who are the Flippers.

Anyone?

Holders have lag, so that their hands are ahead of the ball at impact, generating a downward strike.

Flippers have an early release, hands behind the ball at impact, and the bad shot is hit thin.

Any advice on becoming a Holder?

passive right hand/arm through the downswing

you want the shoulders to drive the arms to carry the hands with the clubhead joining the party at the last moment! If you watch the pro's swing you get the impression that the hands manage to stay ahead of the club head right to the last moments of the finish.

watch many amateurs (and me on a bad day :)) and they seem (do) to stop their shoulders halfway down, swing the arms, release their hands to hit the ball, then use the momentum on the clubhead to drag their shoulders round (sometimes).
