Just found out that Michel Hoey has been disqualified from the Irish Open for carrying 15 clubs in the bag. I'm a bit miffed especially as I had a small wager on him to get in amongst the places.

Seriously, how difficult is it for a top class caddie to only carry 14 clubs in the bag, surely that is the thing to check first?? I presume the DQ was due to the fact he had played 10 holes that day and the cumulative penalty would make playing on pointless?

My question is should all the blame be targetted at the caddy or shared 50:50 with the player? Michael Hoey was implying a small share of the blame lay with him - where does the buck stop?

I would say 70% Caddie 30% Player, yes the bag is the caddies responsibility but the pro should be aware of what he has in there. He must be gutted how was he doing anyone know

I would have thought that, given the Woosnam debacle, every caddie would check the bag thoroughly before the 1st tee.

I think that the bottom line is that the caddy as an employee is responsible but you would think that the pro would have a quick count as a matter of course.

Wildrover you clever chap ;)

You are very correct though:

4-4. Maximum of Fourteen Clubs
a. Selection and Addition of Clubs
The player must not start a stipulated round with more than fourteen
clubs. He is limited to the clubs thus selected for that round, except
that if he started with fewer than fourteen clubs, he may add any
number, provided his total number does not exceed fourteen.
The addition of a club or clubs must not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7)
and the player must not add or borrow any club selected for play by
any other person playing on the course.
b. Partners May Share Clubs
Partners may share clubs, provided that the total number of clubs
carried by the partners so sharing does not exceed fourteen.
PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE 4-4a or b, REGARDLESS
OF NUMBER OF EXCESS CLUBS CARRIED:
Match play – At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is
discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole
for each hole at which a breach occurred; maximum deduction per
round – Two holes.
Stroke play – Two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred;
maximum penalty per round – Four strokes.

He cant have been DQ for carrying 15 clubs, there must be another reason?

I think he admitted he had been carrying 15 clubs the day before so he signed for the wrong score that day. Makes it even worse though - 28 holes (and all the time inbetween) when neither of them noticed the mistake. Someone should have gone to a reputable high street opticians

Molinari has been DQ'd as well!

Edit:

Beat me to it Wildrover :p

Dont beleive the caddy is purely to blame, surely the Player decides what clubs he wants in the bag before he starts his round, How hard can it be to count as he chooses. Infact how didnt he count when he chose??? :D
