I listen to Absolute Radio and heard the Hive Heating ad about 20 times this week. So decided to give it a look and I think it's a great little concept.
So it's basically a wifi heating controller which works off your phone/tablet which allows you to turn your heating on/off/up/down. I thought it would be about £500 odd but on the site full installation and app is £199 which I think is pretty damn good seeing as it can save you a punt load on your bills and allow me to be lazy and turn the heating off without having to go downstairs when I'm in bed.
Anyone got this yet? What's their experience?

Salus controls , RT500RF . wireless portable room thermostat. £75.00 easy to connect to a combi boiler. Only problem is if your neighbour has one and it's set to the same frequency as yours, but it can be changed.

What is the problem to which Hive Heating is the solution?

If its that I need more time in bed its not the problem ;)

Our heating is on one of those timers where you set it using little plastic teeth. Problem is that those are and can't be changed unless you're there. Wife is a bit erratic when it comes to managing this as she gets cold easily, turns it on and up, leaves it etc etc. so the boiler is on at times when we are not even there! This would also allow us to turn the heating on should we be on our way home so that the house was warm when we arrived.

£700 to turn your heating up and down and on and off ?!

There are some really clever systems around at the moment, but when I looked into it a while back I wasn't convinced the cost of them would be recouped by the savings, unless you are on a really crudely controlled system to start with.

Can this be controlled remotely from off site?
The RF500 has a max range of 60 metres I've fitted them in a couple of large houses and they seem to work ok. There's also time programmable version available.

The IT 500 model works via internet / phone , they're priced around £180, i've never used them so can't comment.

Looks like the hive system can be controlled from pretty much anywhere with a wifi / 3-4G signal which makes it really useful.
If it saves you money the its a good thing. £199 isn't too bad. Their claim that you can save £150 a year seems fairly big but even if its £50 a year it would pay for itself in the long run. Also doubtful that energy prices will come down so in 5 years time the saving could be that much bigger. It's the same price as a mid priced driver these days.

How does it save you money ?

Allows you to tun your heating I and off when you're not there. Ours is on auto timer (not digital) so is sometimes on when we aren't there. Also senses when you leave the house and asks if you want to switch the heating off assuming it's on at the time. All worked through your phone with an app

Ah right - suppose that would save me turning it off when i leave the house and then back on again when i return

Its to save you getting out of bed bollock naked in the wee small hours of the morning, when the wife tells you she's frozen/ frigid and you've to turn the heating up.
The thermostat will normally be located at the opposite end of the house.

In my case its downstairs in the west wing and I'm upstairs in the east wing.

Do people really leave the heating on at night? I thought the duvet did away with a need for that.
