One of my regular playing partners in a friendly round will hit a bad shot then drop another and try again.

At one point yesterday he dropped three balls and shanked them all to the same point, we had a chat about this after as I though he just compounded his errors, I feel if you wanted to do this he should really do this after a good shot as all he is doing is recreating a bad shot.

Does anyone else do this or have you seen other people do this, I have to say as sorry as I felt for him it was rather funny.

I sometimes do this, but only when playing alone. For me its not about practicing the shot and never doing it again. Its the psychological side of knowing that i can actually hit the shot i wanted.

I'll do it when playing alone, but only one ball. When playing with others I'll have an extra swing after but not hit another ball. Just really to see if I can figure out what went wrong.

That would annoy me. You hit a bad shot, walk on and get on with it. Dropping balls and trying again is wasting time, use the range to do that.

Im with you on this.

Ive been playing behind a group where someone has done this, and it annoyed the hell out of me.

Dont get me wrong Im not the type who likes to almost run my way through a round, but this did annoy me.

To be fair it does not annoy me, well apart from when I have started to walk on to get on with my shot and then a ball comes winging past me.....

I an just not sure of the point, ok i see you could prove you can hit a good shot from there but on the few occasions I have done this when playing alone I find I don't hit the shot properly and just compound my errors through rushing and not setting up properly etc....

I would add I have see someone nearly taken out by someone doing this, they were attending the flag, once the shot had been hit they moved on to concentrate on the next shot and a ball went fizzing past his head.

Anyone who does this with a group behind is taking the Michael. On your own one quiet course then fine, but don't hold anyone up

Can't remember the last time I hit a bad shot to be honest. Well it is not that I haven't, but I just put it out if my mind. If you have hot a bad one you can't change it, all it has is the ability to do is make you hit another.

If I hit a bad shot I do stand around swinging the club trying to see what went wrong, I just want to forget it and move on. So I put the club back in my bag, call myself a #### and forget all about it.

Penalise him a shot

Then shoot him - as bad as slow players

Wouldn't condone it if others are waiting to play but on a quiet round there isn't a problem. I have been working on my pre-shot routine and part of this is to take a positive out of any shot and then switch off and forget that one. As a result I wouldn't put another straight down as you tend to hit it too quickly without focus and sometimes without any routine

Genuine question but have you always thought a lot in terms of each shot ?

Have you ever just walked up - forgotten any routines , picked a line , taken a stance and just hit the ball ?

I can understand that you're going through swing changes etc but it appears that the thinking could be getting in the way of the swinging maybe ?

Yes but not anymore. Look at any good player and they have a routine. That is all I'm trying to do. The mind is surprisingly empty when I hit a shot.

Do you think about that routine and get worried that you are getting it right and the same every time ?

Is it all new and you're just waiting for it to become natural and the muscles remember it

I did struggle to find a routine I was comfy with. Now I have something I can trust it is just about getting the swing to repeat which is the work I am doing on the range. Not sure there is such a thing as muscle repetition in golf. Trusting my swing is the biggest factor now to progress
