Whats that all about??

Heres the story so far..

Picked up a set of cobra 3/5/7 LD speed from the forum here reg flex almost brand new.. but sadly could not hit them down the middle always sliced them for some reason and just was not happy so lucky in the end a friend took them off my hands for what i paid ( of course he is loving them perfect for him)

Anyways so with the money I got myself a 3 wood G5 with a Alidia NV stiff flex second hand off the bay £65 well used and having this Alidia NV stiff flex same as what my G5 driver has which made me buy it at the time...

But the thing is I hit this thing a mile lol I mean on average about 20 yards more than the dirver.. Fair enough my best hit with my driver and my best hit with the 3 wood i think the driver might have 10 yards tops.

Does anyone have a reason behind why this is??

Feel like a new man with this 3 wood looking forward on the new season.. :D

p.s on the hunt for a g5 5 wood with the same shaft if you know of any :P

What loft has your driver got? It might be too low for your swing therefore your launch angle is low producing a shorter distance than what you achieve with your higher loftet 3 wood

My driver is a 9deg..

But in saying that I had fitting and anything over 9deg of loft i was hitting them way to high going by the computer and the guy advised me that i should not be looking at anything over 9.5 deg..

Hi Hendy,

i had a similar issue with my driver and 3 wood.

I eventually had my driver shortened, which gave me a much better contact and it now out performs my 3 wood.

This may not be the solution for every one admittedly, but I firmly believe that most drivers are too long (shaft wise) for the average amateur to control well enough to obtain maximum benefits.

There may also be other factors such as loft and launch conditions to factor in - but shaft length is equally important. IMHO.

Where about were you fitted?

I'm just theorising here. But if you feel more confident with the 3 wood in hand you're probably hitting it 'harder' than the driver. By putting more in you'll get more out. Maybe you have a slower swing with the driver to regain control.

you said in your earlier post that you sliced your woods,i occasionally have the same problem more so with the driver,i got fitted up for my driver the other week and the pro who had the launch monitor etc set up said that the slice with the longer club causes too much spin therefore losing distance

hmmm good point I think ping tend to keep there drivers a inch longer than some other leading brands, will keep that in mind.

Thanks

fitting with a golf centre about 30miles from me who I think is the biggest/best in n.Ireland

might be the case at the back of my Mind but after going for a fitting and hitting everything from the r9 to the new ping I was not getting any real gains, the guy that was fitting me asked who fitted me with the g5. But when I told him I picked this up of the bay thinking it was the right club for me he said well you did a good job there.

sorry the woods I sliced where the cobra set I had picked up they where reg flex and was wippy for me, I like to hit the ball hard

I would just enjoy it and not worry about it. When I first started out, I would bomb my 3 wood further than my driver and the driver's of most other people.

I think it was just pure confidence. I'd step up and completely believe that I would smash it long a straight. When I used a driver, I'd be wondering where it would end up.

I would enjoy every second of it. It was great fun walking past your mate's best effort with a driver on to your ball that you'd just hit with a 3 wood. There's no end of material for a good bit of banter there!

Of course, they'd end up down in par or better compared to my five or six, but, hey, you've got to enjoy those moments when you can.

If i were to take a wild guess, I would imagine that you are not hitting your driver UP IN THE AIR i.e positive angle of attack and the glancing blow of a less lofted club is spining it too much meaning it doesn't fly or roll as far as it should.

Where is the sweet spot on your driver? - DO you hit it?

k

@ HRC99, dont get me wrong i do enjoy it very much and having that bit more accuracy that comes with the 3 wood is an added bonus.

Not 100% sure of the sweet spot.. But am fairly sure i hit the middle 90% of the time..

I hit the driver over 200 yards which i think is average enough..

Seems to take a nice flight not to high not to low..

But if for example i was to hit one of the mates 10.5 deg stiff flex driver i get the fligh of a PW and carry around 170 yards..

Biggest drive i hit on the fitting day last year was from a callaway tour driver cant remember the model off hand now.. but the face sat open a little and had a 8.5 deg loft, problem was with the open face it affect my accuracy to much.

I think I might see about getting this driver i have shorten a little.. I am 5'10 so not really that short for golf, but as i said above i think ping drivers tend to be a inch longer than the rest to start with.

thanks again for views and input on this guys. :)

I have a feeling that you might be hitting down on the ball with your driver. This will impart backspin and usually a higher flight.

When you are next down the range - tee the ball higher and have it forward in your stance more. Then imagine you are hitting the back of the ball with an upwards motion.

Also not sure about the stiff flex of the shaft - I play a regular flex staff and hit about 225-235 yards. My swing speed with the driver is around 95mph - any idea what yours is?
