Today at work I saw the most appalling display of ignorance/self importance I've ever seen, there was a chap just putting out on the 11th green and about to move onto the 12th but before he could pick up his bag and get to the "T" 3 older gents (I use the term "gents" loosely) scurried over to the "T" and proceeded to "Hijack" it leaving the chap on the 11th treading water for the next 10 minutes whilst they proceeded to slowly make their way down to the green and putt out, what would you have done if it had been you on the receiving end this appalling display of "piss poor etiquette" the chap just stood quietly and watched on but I'd have been steaming and would certainly of had summat to say about it wouldn't you ?...

Your thoughts please !...

I would very politely have asked then what they thought they were doing.

Then suggested I join them as they seemed to want to play the 12th with me.

Then just walked past their gob-smacked faces.

When playing a general knock about I tend to be on a tight schedule and have been known to not bother going out if there are a few people on the course. What I would do if this happened on the 12th would probably depend on what mood I was in and whether I knew the other people involved. It would also depend if this was a well known hole where people 'jumped in', where there is sometimes a sign stating that you cannot start a game from there if anyone is on the green before it.

The main options would be 1. To have words before they all teed off. but that would depend on how close the 11th green was.
2. Wait for them to play the hole and play 2 or 3 balls myself. 3. Walk down past them to the 13th tee and then play 3 balls at snails pace. 4. Just pack in and go to the 19th.

The "12th T" is rite next to the "11th green" and they saw him coming all the way up the "11th" as they were on the putting green at the time, all it was was that the "1st T" was crammed and they didn't wanna wait their turn so thought they'd do the "back 7" to start with, to make it worse the nearest people to the "gent on his own" were still on the "9th" so it wasn't as if they'd have to wait much longer "3 minutes at most" ignorance pure and simple !...

Happened to me several times on our local nine holer. Members who should know better too. I walk past them onto the next tee and play 4 or 5 balls. Trouble is they are so thick or ignorant, or possibly both, they do it all over again next time!

I think you can still have a local rule that 1 balls have no standing.

So first thing to do, is check the rules at the club you are playing, before you go off on one at someone who is actually in the right, albeit it's still a bit of a rubbish thing to do.

Is the right answer, the R&A have left this decision to the individual clubs.

Yup singles are lepers at a couple of clubs local rules near me so it would be handy to know if that's the case at the OPs club (guessing not or we wouldn't have this thread) or if they really were just hijacking the tee and need disposed of in a deep bunker to highlight their etiquette error

even if a single had no standing you would still have the right of way over someone not playing a full round.

No cutting in up here unless the hole before is free, which it wasn't in this case. i would have given them a flea in the ear.
