Hi all, reason for this post is this.

Played yesterday for the 1st time with my Titleist 755's. I had got a bit of stick saying I wouldn't be able to use them as currently looking at a h/cap of 21 after 2 cards (1 more to go). How wrong these people were.

I hit these irons so well yesterday I don't know why people said what they did.

They were easier to hit out of the rough, longer than my cobra's, easier to shape a shot with and just felt so much better.

Shot of the day with them yesterday was a 180yd 5 iron to within 8ft on the green. How chuffed was I and my 3 partners were very complimentary also.

My advice here is get them, sod the oversized irons, you don't need 'em!!!

Well done Jon, couldn't agree more.

I'm using titleist 704's and hit them better than any oversized club I've had. Ditched Di7's and haven't looked back.
Previously had 2 sets of titleist 690cb's (beautiful clubs) but swapped and changed for silly reasons. Wouldn't go near a big club now , Ping G10's etc etc. Have won 3 comps' with these clubs and if I only didn't putt like a 28 h'cap my scores would be much improved. Handicaps don't reflect ball striking, only scores. My short game is sh1t, have the stats to prove it. :(

Happy playing, they're a lovely set of clubs. Be prepared though, when you get used to Titleist irons, you never go back to anything else. :D

John.

I echo the above, noone needs oversize clubs when they should be looking for the sweetspot in the first place.
You will never completely miss the ball so playing with heads that are closer to tour sized than oversize means you will be getting used to them now rather than some time in the future when your handicap will enevitably drop.

Tony, x20s are excellent clubs for parkland golf mate dont give them up without a struggle. I think if you went to play a few links courses though you would have an awful amount of trouble keeping the ball under control as they certainly like to soar high. But then again, if you are like me and dont get to links courses anywhere near often enough then those weapons will do you fine for years.
Apart from a brief spell with x12s and x16s for a couple of months each and the only downer I could honestly think of was that I couldnt play fades and hooks properly for getting out of trouble, I have mostly used irons with a small cavity and smallish heads since and there is more manouverability there. The difference between chunky clubs and slender ones is mostly in your head, if you think you cant hit them then chances are you will mishit often.
It might be interesting for you to try to hit a few small headed clubs just for fun to see how you get on, id say if you fancy them you will be able to hit them fine.

This is very interesting considering I have recently changed from a set of macgregor forged blades (vip tourney)which were my first set of clubs to the Ping G10s. The feel is incomparable but there is no doubt on average I hit the Pings better, although it is pretty even in the sense that the macgregors were better on good shots but the Pings are better on the bad ones. I was a worse player then than I am now but I still hit the blades pretty well so I agree there is no reason not to use them. I just prefer the greater consistency that comes with the Pings. I really do miss the feel of the Macgregors though.

It just shows that you have to go with what you feel most comfortable with, I am more confident with the G10s and therfore play better with them. That doesn't mean I can't/ couldn't use 'players' irons, I just choose not to due to the consistency issues.

Heres my opinion.

Players clubs come in all shapes and sizes so don't be fooled into thinking a players club is a bit of tin foin on a stick.

I have Clevelans CG4 tour irons and was told they were for the lower handicap golfer. The reason I like them so much is the fact that the clubs have a slightly smaller head than the regular irons on the market and I believe this makes you a better striker of the ball as an off centre hit really does loose distance and also send vibrations up your arms.

So smaller headed cavity back ironsw will improve your ball striking but nothing would ever make me use blades such as CG1's (eh Birdieman?)

Depending on what you want from the game depends on what equipment you use.

Ive come to terms with the fact im not superman or tigerwoods and will never where a green jacket form augusta,

I would love to get a set of proper blades cos i dont care anymore if i birdie or Triple bogey a hole now! im so fed up with all the technical bullshite and swing mechanics (including custom fitting) that i just wanna enjoy the game so sod it!!

I've just ditched my Macgregor M565's in favour of a smaller headed older Mizuno MX20. Not exactly a players club, but much more so that the MacGregors.

Interesting about feel though. The M565's are forged, as are the MX20's, yet I really don't like the 'feel' of them. Why? They sound very hard and tinny at impact compared even to my old MX15s. There was an interesting study done on feel where lots of players wore earplugs and hit whatever they were handed. Only a very small percentage of players could detect any difference in feel between a vast selection of clubs, forged and cast.

Why? Feel, it seems, is nearly all the do with the sound a club makes at impact.

Just goes to show.....it's all down to what we/you like. I reckon my 565s are way, way better than the T-zoids I had, which the MX20 are just an evolution. For me, I was sold on the reassuring feeling/sound/flight of the 565s from the 1st hit....the Zoids were plainly the work of the devil from the day I picked them up from the custom fitters. The MX20s may be the pick of the bunch of course.....sadly not all Mizunos are the same, for my money they make the best and the worst of clubs......they have the business sense to know that a selection of blade/cavity/oversized/offset/forged/cast etc. all means that there should be a club for everyone.
