Simple question.

Who's your golfing hero ?

I'm sure it's been asked before, but let's run it up the flagpole. Ok so Tiger and Jack are the greatest, but I've never had delusions of grandeur ( yeah, right

).

Personally my hero was always Ken Brown

Yup, that bloke you youngsters sometimes see on telly as a pundit.

Skinny waif of a guy, I never worked out how he could hit it far enough to be competetive. And that putting stroke - how the hell did that work ?

But boy, could that lad chip a ball from around the green. He inspired me to spend hours using my sandwedge for every little chip and run I could think of. I never once managed to get that check/chip sussed, and of course one should learn to use diferent clubs to play the chip and run.

But once, long, long ago, me and my Petron Impala sandwedge managed to chip in from around the green 5 times in one round.

Thank you Ken.

Faldo for me.

Watching his tempo and patience gave me a good grounding and taught me not to rush. Whenever I start to get quick I just picture Faldo playing the same shot and everything kind of slows to a crawl in my mind.

When Trevino beat Jacklin at Muirfield in the early 70's he was the first I really thought of as a boyhood hero. he was not the typical golf pro.

As time passed I thought Sandy Lyle was the one to watch. I still think he was one of the best iron players ever. A very distinctive swing but with such power and timing it was amazing to watch.

Its such a shame he didn't get his head sorted out when he began to tinker with his natural swing. Still up there in my books though.

I have two and both have been mentioned already.

Faldo was just starting to appear on the scene when i first got into golf and was drawn to his almost 'blinkered' approach and determination where very little seemed to faze him . His focus was amazing and it was this that i think upset a lot of other golfers/media/fans but to me he was English and successful.

I also admire Monty for his swing. To my amateur eyes , its a thing of beauty , being so languid and smooth , and seemingly so effortless.

One of the reasons i also liked these two was because they were 'our' golfers , Brits that were among the worlds best . However , for some reason i couldn't warm to Sandy Lyle or , to a lesser extent , Woosie. I can't explain why , but i never got as excited with them winning the big ones as i did Faldo.

From the modern day era , i like M A Jimenez , especially when he's strolling along the fairway , cigar in mouth , looking like he's out on a society day :)

Greg Norman
Seve
Darren Clarke

And to a certain extent Monty, as there have been a few similarities in his swing to mine, at least for a time.

I could mention many golfers that have impressed me over the years like for instance Mark James. Who I think never really got the recognition he deserved.

Faldo was my overall favaourite, but I loved to watch both Langer & Olazabal for their fantastic short game!

I also love the way Couples has gone about his golf during his career.

Norman was the man when I was growing up and watched him at Troon when he started the 4th round with 6 birdies and lipped out for his 7th,I was running between shots to watch him!
A real showman who had the lot, power, flair, touch, looks and class just a shame he didn't win the majors his talents deserved.
