Having gone through redundancy twice already the Royal Berkshire Hospital have been on all the news channels today announcing up to 600 job losses with 200 in the first year. Areas targetted and specifically mentioned include human resources (and guess where the recruitment team report into!).

I'm being cynical but we have so many middle managers in admin positions on £30k plus but because many have been there ages, are over 50 (so their pension costs need to be accounted for in calculating redundancy) there are no prizes for guessing where the axe will actually fall.

We've been busting a gut over the last 18 months to meet safer recruitment standards and recruit into the already under resourced frontline areas. I can't see an outsourced recruitment team being dedicated enough to chasse certificates of good conducts (overseas police checks) and check gaps in employment and reference history.

Totally cheesed off. Funny how they are spending millions on doing up a building across the road so the current HR floorspace can be converted for clinical use. Why spend the cash and then cut the staff. Typical NHS logic.

Sorry for the rant but it hasn't been a great day.

This country is totally shagged, good people are being thrown to the dogs and for what? The pursuit of figures. People matter less now than at any time that I can recall, everything is run on figures and who produces figures? Middle management. I have watched a company that I have worked at for 15 yrs being slowly stamped into the ground by middle management who rely totally on their figures to prove anything they want. I feel for you Homer. I had a fantastic job and now hate every single day of work.
I hope you will be O.K.

Not good news Homer - thought of you as soon as I heard it on the radio. They must still need some form of recruitment team. Here's hoping you get kept on.

wouldn't have mattered who had got in, the money was p'd away and has to be recouped. Brown's band of merry clods are quite happy copying Harry Enfields 'you don't want to do it that way'

no comfort for those that are going to do the suffering but you can be sure that those that did it won't be amongst them.

not a great time Homer.

It is days like to day I'll really miss. Spent the whole day in the company of three young (early 20's) Portugese nurses who flew in on Thursday and were came in to do their paperwork and for me to show them around the hospital. What isn't to like about looking after young friendly lady's and making sure their first impressions of the hospital are good ones. I even introduced them to fish, chips and mushy peas for lunch.

The home office couldn't be bothered to turn to the courts this week to see through the removal of illegal immigrants.

The court had no choice but to grant them stay.

House them, heat them, feed them and whatever else free support they want.

Is it any wonder there's no money left in the pot to support our own.

Govt spending is out of control. Agreed, often the priorities are often wrong, but, the number of 'invented' public sector jobs since Tony came to power is ridiculous. Eg. Lesbian single mothers support and integration manager. £35k pa. Final salary pension scheme. 35 hours a week. I kid you not. It was advertised in Portsmouth a year or two ago. Is it really needed?

Sorry to say that it's about time this sort of thing was culled.

Being made redundant is not pleasant. I went through it a year and a half ago. But the private sector has to cut it's cloth to suit. Why shouldn't the public sector?

I just hope that the priorities are set correctly, and not just at broad brush strokes to essential services. Though sadly I think that.a political game is being played, as opposed to common sense.

This is not a private verses public sector debate, and I've no wish to start one. But cuts are needed.

No dig at you personally Homer. But I think you understand where I'm coming from.

THe NHS and department for health put in much tougher and stringent pre-employment checks which means even more hoops for both candidates and recruiters to go through in terms of police checks, references etc. Our team have pretty tight turnarounds imposed by our own managers to deal with as well and as much as it seems as though I'm always here, the day job has been quite rogorous at times especially in my area, medicine which includes main front line areas like cardiac care, stroke units, elderly care and renal.

Smoe days like yesterday where I spend it in the company of young and pretty nurses are great and a pleasant change. The thing is the whole of the recruitment team has busted themselves to drag a shot reputation back up and we are now looked upon by those that matter (in our eyes) such as the ward sisters etc with higher esteem. Its only stupid management introducing more and more ludicrous initiatives like making everyone in the trust complete enhanced CRB checks (including vetting for vulnerable adults and children) when most middle managers don't venture anywhere near a ward.

It's funny that.

I blame Gordon and Tony for getting us so deep into trouble in the first place.

Yep we should not have rebuilt new schools or hospitals or regenerate cities, how on earth are the rich going to make profit from that?? I tell you these left wing commies will be the down fall, I will stick with my right wing fascists in the EU.

To many middle managers who then form committiees which then desolve when there are problems. People whom use self set targets and remidial measures rather than solving the cause of problems. I know you are right Homer - they will probably cut the wrong people - but if they cut the right people then top line would make all the other managers accountable and that would open too many negliglance cases.

Dunno about regenerating cities - I can't comment on that.

But there haven't been any new schools or hospitals rounds here. In fact they've been trying to shut the one A&E we have for over 6 years. And they've been planning thousands of 'cheap' new homes for years, which are now being built, with no schools, doctors etc to look after the increased populace.

I've seen the police station have to close it's doors at 6.00pm so any coppers now have to come from an extra 10 miles away, when you dial 999.

All I've seen is a huge wasting of money on services with no improvement.

Rediculous greed with the economy during the boom times, so the recession hit us harder than it should have.

And waste of money and life in wars that have nothing to do with us.

Not saying that the Tories would have done any better.

But they weren't in power, so I blame the blokes that were. They should have looked after our great country better, but only made sure their own needs and pockets were looked after. They blindly threw away the lives of our soldiers just so they would go down in the history books as great statesmen. And they left the bankers free to make millions for themselves, whilst bankrupting the country.

I'll judge the Tories after they've lied to us for a few years, but I wont blame them just yet.
