Investing in new clubs, and I have had the x hot driver for a while and going great, in the last week bought the x hot 5 wood 19 deg and bought TM RBZ Stage 2 22 and 25 hybrids, which for me were far better than the x hot equivalents

I tried the x hot and stage 2, 3 woods and none of them worked as well as my faithful Cleveland Launcher DST 3 wood 15 deg however I am now finding I am hitting the x hot 5 wood as far as the Cleveland

Should I ditch the 3 wood, the height of the cleveland is lower and they are both going about 220-230 yards

My other thought was to try the Rbz 3 wood HL, as said the rbz hybrids are quality, and that coming from a Callway man.

Appreciate any comments on this,

arent you hitting the X hot 5 wood as far as the 3 wood partly down to the firm fairways and warmer weather?

I wouldn't be quick to dump the 3 wood as the weather will change

I can only give my point of view here but I cannot see the point of a 3 wood. They can hit as far as a driver but are a bitch to hit from the fairway. I wouldn't see any positives in carrying one for a handicap golfer. I'd rather have a 1 iron than a 3 wood.

a 1 iron is easier to hit than a 3W:rolleyes:

what was it Trevino said about God and a 1 iron

Mike, not sure if both in the bag are a red herring for your track. Driver and 5w/19h I would think would be enough if you are hitting the driver well.
Played Canmore with a mate last week and never took the 3w out with me as with no Par 5's I couldn't see where I would need it.
Maybe you don't need it at all?

Greg do you notice a yardage difference with your 3 and 5 wood, hope you enjoyed Canmore played on wed night

Yeah, I would play a 5w anything up to 210 and a 3w anything up to around 225. But with such a small difference and the yardages a Canmore a decent 230+ drive meant that there wasn't any need for another 225 and found that the 5w could cover off all of the longer shots if over my max iron yardage.

It was in good nick last week, played the Friday night in balmy 24 degree heat with no wind. Greens were like greased lightening. Especially the 15th.

My pro always said to take a 3 wood from the deck you need the perfect lie. Off the tee it is a great choice for controlling distance.

My good driver is as long as my best 3 wood, my best driver is 30-40 yards on a best 3 wood.

For me anything above a 4 iron is a tee only club, bar the perfect lie, that's just my ability limiting me.

I have ditched my 3 wood in favour of a 17 deg hybrid, easier to hit ( for me ) and goes as far, was never very good with a 3 wood so this seemed to make sense.

If a driver only went as far as a 3 wood I'd be dropping the driver.

Any one new to the game reading this please DON'T replace your 3w with a 1iron:swing:

Its not trolling when it's banter.

In these drier conditions I've been using my driver less and the 3 and 5 wood have been coming into their own off the tee. Marked increase in accuracy (if you take out the lost ball on the 18th today) and not a huge loss in distance. I think even in winter I may use the 3 wood more. There are a couple of holes, 16 in particular where accuracy is more important and at 420 yards I can play it as a par five with my shot. Chances are I will make more net pars than banging the driver to get it as far up as I can, bringing the OB left and rough right into play.

I love my 5 wood it's the club I've been searching for since starting golf

I hit it from any lie, off the tee, rough you name it only when it's buried in the cabbage is it no good

I use mine like a big hybrid, then I have a 22 hybrid and start my irons at 5 or 6 iron depending on how i feel

I've also been using my 3 wood off the tee and doing without the driver as its so erratic

I dropped the 3 wood, replaced it with a 4 wood. This was successful, but I was getting miffed with it going a little too right. So I replaced it with the 5 wood and its mega ... I mean its huge, precise and both off tee and fairway. I rarely use my driver now, it pops them up on the wind and explodes down the fairway. ( to quote McDonald's ... I'm lovin it!)
