Help Red wine choice

Ok knowledgable people, I am wanting to buy a bottle for a Xmas pressie but I have as much idea as Del Boy. Can somebody recommend some that won't need a mortgage but you can tell a bit of thought has gone into it. Cheers

Another for Barolo. But lidl or aldi for half the price. Plus lidl for good wines at cheap prices

Fleurie is very nice ( French, sell it in Waitrose) £11- 12 a bottle .

The problem with wine is everyone has different tastes. There are plenty of wines generally accepted to be very good (CNdP being one) but doesn't mean everyone likes it.

Some of my favourites are:

CNdP
St Emilion
St Julien
Pauillac
St Estephe

I also like some of the new world stuff, a good South African Pinotage is hard to beat.
