Returning to Golf after a 4 year sabbatical. At the time I was using a starter set of Hippo irons/woods which served me very well and got me my first handicap (25 - no laughing at the back please!). Anyway just as I started getting more serious about improving my game and was looking into replacing my gear along came my two children and away went all my spare time. Now I have some time I want to start playing again, but I would like to buy some clubs that are one step up from the beginner set I had last time (hope you're following this!).

Any recommendations might help me focus my search as there seems to have been an explosion in the range of gear available thesedays!

Trial and error worked for me. You could do worse than looking at used set of Pings (I3, I3+, G2's etc) as they are easy to hit but powerful too. Give you a range of fittings with their colour system.

It is a question of budget and ability.

As you are just returning to the game i am assuming its safe to say you are a high handicaper 25+?

In which case you would be better off ( in my opinon ) with as forgiving a club as you can get at a budget you can afford.

Pricebuster golf (.co.uk if you want a look ) are doing a set of Howson assassin cavity backs with a stand bag for £60.
Astonishing good value....but i would only recommend these clubs for high handicappers ( for high handicappers they are excellent clubs!!!).
You could ( as suggested ) go for a used but better level club but personally i wouldnt do this as if your knowledge of clubs isnt good you could end up getting "ripped off" on e-bay or some such other!

I dont know how serious you are about your golf "comeback" but you could decide you have the budget to spend more!
In which case for some1 of the handicap your suggesting i would recommend something like the deep red cavity backs or the mizuno mx17's or 19's.
NEW you are looking betwwen £150-£220 depending which you like!

Whatever you decide welcome back!!!! :D

Don't go in at the bottom, I did and snapped the head off the 7.
I didn't lose out as I got a full return (amgolf) and then went up a notch or so for the new set.

Hi mate, I am off 22, and in the Spring purchased Wilson Pi5 irons, as used by Padraig no less. I can honestly recommend the clubs, they are top quality, producing a lovely high ball flight, pretty forgiving too, and long, I'm not a big hitter but 135/140yds from a 9 iron ??
Best of all they are on offer for 199 quid from Direct Golf
