would my game be affected much if I take a year out

I play off 4 and just too busy to play/practice?
Has anybody else done the same?

Judging by the fact you don't have time to type all the letters needed, you should certainly look to sort out some priorities ;)
In all seriousness though, if you have 3 young kids make sure you're spending enough time with them. They're only young once. You'll never get those years back. I have 2 young kids and only play golf when I get the time, after spending time with the family. Yes I'll never make it to a decent handicap level but I enjoy it and am motivated to play - because it's me time. Maybe consider dropping membership, and just playing when you have the time to do so, visit a few courses, practise when you can. Yes you'll lose some ability but you'll easily pick that up again in time I'm sure.

Re: would my game be affected much if I take a year out

Last year I went from practicing every day to maybe hitting balls every 4 weeks and the thing I have noticed now is my mobility has suffered terribly, especially around the shoulder area. I am hitting the ball nearly as well now but the swing doesn't feel right yet because of the lack of mobility.

Probably yes but it sounds like you have a big job on your hands with a family and a job with long hours, fair play to you for that.

Maybe in a year or so you will have more time and you can get back into it good luck.

Your game would probably suffer to some degree but it's dependent upon the individual, of course.

I've two friends who virtually quit for 2 years after playing off scratch and 2 respectively (work and family commitments) and after one season back, playing once a week, they're both within one shot of where they were. Long since believed that once you've learnt skills they never really go - practice makes them perfect though.

?? Do you have any advice for me as im new to this forum thanks??

Welcome along. If you've "won all there is to win" in two years at the club you've done well already. I'm not a family man or will get to your level but my take would be your kids only grow up once. Why no cut back on the playing and working on your game, have no expectations on the 2016, don't stress if the handicap increases and just play as and when you can fit it in around work and the family. I wouldn't bin golf altogether, as it's good to have some you time

During my time in the forces there were times when I had to give up for a minimum of six months at a time. You soon get back into it again without any real loss of talent.

Form is temporary, talent is permanent.

I played continually for about 20 years and then gave up for 15 whilst my family were growing up. It didn't affect my game at all.... I was still rubbish
