in fact i was new to golf altogether last year.

but im really enjoying the game and im just trying to find a busy/friendly forum to read some tips and reviews from you old hands at the game.

this summer i joined a GolfClub at castelreagh Hills Belfast. and i have been enjoying playing there since.

i tend to fluctuate between bad rounds and worse rounds :o but its all practice.

more recently i had been playing abit better and won our midweek comp(over 9 holes) so my luck held up ok that round.

looking some very general tips on driving and how to beat par3s. im awful off a tee with an iron.

so hello!

Phil

ps ive been reading the forum for a while before signing up and i recognise "brendy" from RMS so hello to him.

Welcome aboard Phil,
Royal County Gilnahirk as it used to be called, I was a member there too for a few years before it was converted to an 18 holer. Still know a few members up there, been 10 years though.

Hi

Welcome to the forum. It really is a great place for advice and discussion. Quite a few Northern Irish on here too so you should feel at home. With GMac and Rory doing so well it's a great time for NI golf.

Tell us a bit more about your issues with the driver and on the par 3's. What sort of problems are you having (hook, slice, fat, thin etc). There's lot of good advice around including two PGA pros (bobmac and charlie hopper).

issues with the driver :

inconsistency: out on the course
I can have good drives and alright drives. I don’t hit very long but that is the least of my worrys as the harder I try the more I slice. so I tend to try and keep slices to a minimum and try and keep it straight.

inconsistency: at the range
I also notice that my driving at a driving range varies a lot more than on the course. id say my driving on the course is acceptable and even fairly consistent when contrasted to the range!!. I hit long or wrong and I find it very hard to practice at the range.

I certainly have never left the range thinking “ that should give me abit more confidence off the tee”.

issues with par 3s. :
I was always told to keep my hands infront of the ball and try and squeeze the ball off the fairway(using irons) and I manage that ok.
but step up to a par3 and everyone says “always tee it up at the par3s, take every advantage your given” and I regularly have bad connections/results when using an iron of a tee.

Alright Brendy, maybe after ive a few years practice we’ll have a round!!

Phil

Aye , We'll get you along to one of the games my man.
If you find par threes a nightmate, take the extra club and swing easy, remember you dont have to hole it, you can still chip and putt for a par never mind a handicap par.

I used to have a lot of problems slicing and it took me a few lessons and a fair bit of practice to sort it out, and I still slice the odd one as do most mid/high handicappers, especially as the driver is such a straight faced club.

Slicing can be the result of a number of things such as grip, swing path, hand action or even the wrong shaft in your driver for your swing, so I'll leave that to others to suggest a possible cause and fix, but a lesson with a good local pro wouldn't hurt.

Par 3's; if you are ok with an iron of the deck it may be that you are teeing the ball too high. The idea is you should tee it so it's sitting up like a really good lie, rather than teeing it up as you would for a driver. Teeing it too high will result in hitting the ball with the upper part of the club face and you'll lose a fair bit of distance. Again there may be others on here who might have other thoughts but that's one possibility.

You don't have to tee the ball up on par threes. I haven't for years. Does help if your tees are in good condition ! Never be afraid to experiment.

I never said not to put some effort into it, shanks happen because you had naughty thoughts about broom handle putters, no other reason. :p

Come on Brendy. You can't get out of it.
Telling a newbie to take one more club and swing easy on a par 3 is a shank waiting to happen
:D :D :D :D
