I have a 3 wheel push trolley & an electric trolley.
My home course doesn't insist on Hedgehog's during the wet weather, they either allow trolleys or ban them when it gets boggy, ( carry only) but, a few course's near me that I play occasionally insist on them in winter.
I have now fitted my Hedgehog wheels, but I do wonder what difference they actually make?
When I have used both types of wheel during wet weather, I see little difference in the function of either types of wheel.

The difference I find is the wheels get a better grip and they don't skid/spin especially when going uphill. Also saves your battery as there is no loss of traction .
The small indentations they do make soon return to normal, where as golfer carrying a full bag leaves a bigger and deeper concentrated imprint.

Our club tends to have hedgehog signs up by late November although I remain unconvinced they actually make a huge difference. The biggest issue I have is everyone tends to exit a green at the same point even if the route is roped off to prevent the vicinity of the green. It ends up becoming a muddy furrow and I don't see what protection hedgehogs offer. When golfers are wandering across airways I don't see what difference these wheels have over normal ones as it is surely a case of a golfer walking across and the grass recovering straight after

Not sure I agree with this. It almost sounds like you are saying that winter wear and tear is caused more by people carrying then trolleys?
Yes if your carrying a full set of clubs it adds about 2 stone to your overall weight concentrated on one foot at a time in my case that makes a 17stone impact made each step , compared to the weight being spread over multiple points when using hedgehog wheels.

Poppycock! :o

The main place wear and tear in the winter takes place is beside greens and tees and from the green to the tee. The main reason for this is trolley traffic.

Totally agree. When you carry you can easily avoid all the muddy areas that trolley users frequent.

Do I get banned at 6 foot, 19 stone and size 13 feet?

Solo buggies do more damage than anything else at our place but all electric trolleys get banned even mine that I use as a push trolley with no real reason being given.

Is there such a thing as hedgehog wheel covers (ie, that can me put over existing wheels, a bit like snow chains on car wheels) or is it a case of physically changing the wheels?

I am not sure of the benefits of hedgehogs but my club insists on them from 1st November so I changed the wheels over last week.

The one thing that has always confused me is that my playing partner cannot use his clic gear with pneumatic tyres. I would have thought that they would cause even less damage than even a trolley with hedgehogs.

Yes , that' the ones I have they pull over existing wheel, they come in black or orange, I would suggest using cable ties to hold them in place, as the clips provided are not that great.
I got mine from a local pro shop but you can get them on line.
