My wife and I are looking to rent a place for a few days break in Scotland later in the year. Just want to get away for 4 or 5 days, find a few nice pubs, some good food and just head out in the car or on foot to just look around. Neither of us know Scotland well and want to get to know the place a bit better.

Thing is, I am looking at all of these lovely cottages etc on line but have no idea what the areas are like. The favourite at the moment is at a place called St Madoes near Perth. Anyone know it who can comment.

Also happy to take any recommendations. All I want it somewhere in a nice area with a pub nearby, everything else I can reach in the car.

No way mate, that is less than 10 miles from my house! St Madoes is quite a sleepy wee place with just one shop but a really good pub,the Glencarse Hotel. You are more than welcome to get a round with me at Alyth if you go,and you will be near Errol which has two decent restaurants (but you will be 15 min by car from Perth and Dundee both, with loads to do in each).I work in Perth and my wife works in Dundee,I would be more than happy to meet up for a meal/drinks/banter if you fancy bud!

St Madoes is not exactly out of the way and quiet. It sits alongside the main road from the south to Dundee and Aberdeen.

It is near the motorway, but hardly loud,I travel through it every day on my way to Perth. It is not exactly picturesque, but a good base to explore Perthshire,Angus, and Fife.

What about heading to Donegal Greg? Any town will give you what you are looking for with the added bonus of getting a round or two in

Not that there is anything wrong with Scotland either...

Oi cheeky chops, there are better courses within 30 miles of St Madoes than the same from Donegal! Cheaper to get to also! You have St Andrews(all of them),Carnoustie,Scotscraig,Monifieth,Gleneagles, and erm...Alyth!!! :-)

I think he means the horn restaurant Clive  can't think of any others out your way.
Greg you will enjoy Perthshire and St Madoes is not a bad place to base yourself easy access to Fife etc, on a plus point you will get plenty offers of golf with us forum members if your allowed to play when on holiday.

No worries! Where do you live Clive? I am just after Grange next to Seasyde Farm.I would happily join you for a pint at The Smithy if you want some time? Edit:where did the previous post go?

Do you want Hills and Glens?
If so Arochar is pretty good.
Not too much driving as it is at the top end of Loch Lomond. Lots of nice pubs and Hotels. Recommend the Village Inn. Loch Fyne resteraunt just up the road Days out at Oban and Fort William.

I'm a huge fan of Arisaig on the Road to the Isles. Gorgeous area, outstanding walks along the beaches, fantastic fresh local fish landed daily at Mallaig, boat trips to the Isles of Muck Eigg and Rum.

Day trips over to the Isle of Skye. Glenfinnan monument and viaduct.

Great pubs and eateries.

Superb little 9 hole golf course at Traigh.

My strong recommendation. I can also give you contact details of a smashing little cottage that we always rent.

Agree with Craw, heading to Mallaig next week!
I've lived in Scotland nearly all life and have travelled but my favourite spots in no particular order are –

Gairloch/Badachro area
East Neuk of Fife and St Andrews
North Berwick and East Lothian Coast
Upper Deeside
Strathspey
Dornoch/Brora
Skye
Mallaig/Arisaig

We're practically neighbours then. I am at Middlebank.
