So that wonderful time of year is here again! The sun is out, people cutting their grass, the flowers in bloom & I feel like I have been struck by the worst man flu in the world!!

I have always suffered with hayfever but never this bad.

What do you guys use? In the past I have tried a number of pills & potions with some effect but not really worked a lot.

I used to use a herbal tablet called New Era but can't seem to find them anymore. They were really good.

There are the usual Piriton & alike, but have any of you found anything better?

A friend of mine suggested that you take a spoon of honey each morning.

Not just any honey though, find some (maybe a farm shop) that is made locally. I think his theory is that you're building up a resistance to it by taking it in the first place, like a snake guy who gets bitten on purpose.

Could be codswallop though, I've not tried it.

Never heard of that but makes sense. Will give it a go

The honey has to be local to you as it is local pollen that is causing the problem. No point buying honey made at the other end of the country I'm afraid, or China as so much is now. Go to your local farm shop and ask the question.

If it is that bad go to your doctor. My son gets tablets on prescription, much stronger than Piriton, and he also gets a nose inhaler which works well for him. We got him an air purifier thing from Lloyds pharmacy, about £15 4 years or so ago. That runs through the night and stopped his eyes clagging up.

All of these things only reduce the symptons though, it doesn't stop them.

Cheers LT. Will have a look & see what I can find.

I am normally ok with piriton, but as I have never suffered this bad. It may be a cold, but to rule it out I thought I would try the hayfever stuff aswell.

Anti Histamines work great as you are probably aware.

Go see your GP as they can prescribe nasal spray. If its really bad they will give you steroids which usually does the trick in terms of helping you breathe!

The nasal steroid spray is the only thing that fixed my allergy issues a couple of years backs but you'll need a prescription.

This works for me, as long as i do it throughout the year

ok cheers guys. will pop into my local chemist for now as really struggling to focus at my desk at the mo. Will call the quacks for an appointment. Might get seen around xmas knowing my gp!

My hay fever went away mid May, but is now back. I don't take tablets, as they all make me tired, and don't really work.
The nasal sprays all give me nose bleeds.
I'd rather have hay fever.

Started with it about 3 summers back. It isn't horrendous, although the stinging eyes are a pain. My GP prescribed the nasal spray...

Beconase nasal spray and Opticrom eye drops are very good but you have to use it every day. The spray coats your nasal passage with antihistamine and the drops coat your eyes, this means you dont get tired due to the antihistamine not being in in your blood. Available over the counter.

In the latest golf monthly there was a ad for haymax. I have now been using this for 3 weeks and since that time my eyes have not watered when playing golf and i have not been having sneezing fits. This stuff may not work for everyone but for me it has been a great bit of kit. Not taken any hay fever tablets since i started using it.

Same for me re:OTC remedies. Cetirizine once daily plus beconase two puffs per nostril twice daily has me sorted this year so far. Nose a tad dry but a vast improvement of symptoms.

Can buy a months supply of both OTC for less than the cost of a single prescription.

Key is to take it regularly from about March/April-Sept/Oct to maintain the effect and prevent exacerbations.

I've had hayfever from being a kid, it went away for a good few years, but this year it's either come back, or the pollen is real high. There are different kinds of hayfever depending which pollen you are allergic to. For some it is grass, other flowers and other tree pollen, you're pretty much in for a miserable time if it's all three.

Good tip to help prevent pollen getting in you eyes, a smear of Vaseline just below and on your eyelid really does help.

Word of advice don't OD on hayfever pills, when I was 18 went to Ibiza with the lads, had a 24hr pill in the morning, but seeing as I was going to be on the pull took another later then evening before going out, didn't want runny eyes and snotty nose ruining my chances. We get to the night club and I have a very large vodka, not long after feeling very drunk I went outside and passed out, I awoke with just my forehead resting on a table edge, looking down I could see this black line move across my vision, I thought feck me I'm flying, took me a while to realise it was just ants moving from their hole in the pavement to a pile of sugar someone had spilled.

I manged to get a nasal spray over the counter from the local Tesco Pharmacy which did the trick.

Its like inhaling pure chlorine and it makes look look like im drowning when i use it, but it works.:D

Have a shower before you go to bed each night, your hair will be full of pollen etc which will cause you issues in the morning. It really helps me, and i get it really bad!
