Has anyone ever made a sport related decision and looked back wondering was it a mistake...

As most know on here i snapped my achilles tendon 2 years ago which saw me retire from playing football at high club level...

Iv always looked after myself fitness wise.....Iv been playing indoor footie for the past 6 months 2 nights a week and to be honest iv never really lost the hunger for football...

Im thinking of going back training with my old team for the winter and getting fully fit again....Im only 36 and have never drank or smoked but im wondering will it be a mistake.....

Iv got the all clear from HiD's and she is fully supportive of me....Her reasoning being that the injury was an unexpected hurdle that was thrown in front of me at the wrong time...

Has anyone ever went back on a decesion that they thought was for good?

if it counts, i took an 6 iron into the wind on the par 3 today and wish i had taken a 5 iron! other than that, not really

Kid!! I'm starting to contemplate a return to football too! Nothing too concrete yet, but I keep having those day dreams about playing for my former club again. Need to get fit first, but I do still find myself asking 'what if it happens again?' and that thought scares the crap out of me! :D

It's been 8 months since I did mine so I'm not surprised you're having thoughts about returning. Wasn't missing it until a few weeks ago. Just don't want to make the move until I'm 100% certain it's the right one.

I don't think you should regret stopping playing as it's a big hurdle, both mentally and physically. And you've still got a few years left to play...just look at Giggsy! :D

You need to start playing again because you'll regret it. Until this season, I was in the same position as you.

I was playing a high standard and then my ankle ligaments were torn after a bad tackle. But....I got a call 3 months ago to play for one of the top sides in West Sussex and now I'm playing again (3 goals in 3 games I would to add).

I love golf but I only started it in the absence of football.

In 5 years time you will not have an option to play at the standard of football currently available to you.

However there will still be the option for golf. Additionally you know in your own mind you want to go back; that is clear from reading your post.

Go for it my man!

Not getting off my arse and trying other ways to pay for my PGA exams even if I only got enough to have done the first year. Expected my parents to stump up and when they couldn't assumed the club or pro would help. Naivety on my part and laziness too. Fell out of love with the game, got a few injuries and that was that. Enjoyed my Sunday morning footie but that was more about the post match cameraderie than the result. Miss playing darts too but not being able to drink and being in a pub all evening wasn't enjoyable anymore

The only regrets you should have in life is for something you've done. Don't reach old age regreting not returning to football, or whatever.

So little grasshopper, get your boots out the cupboard and get yourself out there.

As long as you do not risk doing any long term damage or aggreating an injury then go for it.

If it would not mean having surgery on my shoulder I would get my rugby boots out of the cupboard in a flash (says something that I still have all of my rugby kit nearly 4 years after I stopped playing).

Never regret something you did not do.

Cheers for the replies gents...
I suppose its something that I have to do myself...If it doesn't work out then so be it...But then I give 100% to everything I do so fingers crossed the leg will stay strong.

I'd say go for it.

I would love to still be playing football but sadly can't.

Like you played to a high level from a schoolboy until mid 20's, however very serious knee injuries and 20+ operations later left me no choice if I wanted to have any quality of life with my family, in terms of playing with kids etc.

Still only 32 and I would love to be out playing, miss it every Saturday (and Tuesday/Thursday training nights!) even with the golf to play.

Anyone that can play and chooses not to frustrates me as I don't have the choice so get back in there, even if you only get a couple of years or so out of it you'll enjoy it.

So how much for the irons then ;) good luck

Not a chance pal. :D

Still gonna get the odd game or 2 in...
Who knows....As there are a lot of young lads now in the team if they are not pulling their weight them ill be off.

I played good standard competitive squash until my family banned me from playing at the age of 64. 9 years later I still have very realistic nighttime dreams of playing again and making a comeback.

Live the dream.

Go back if, and only if, you can compete at the level you were at.

If you can't, then you won't enjoy it. At all.

Thats my plan murph....

I played at centre back....Was very mobile and very fast across the ground and if i even feel that ill be a yard off that pace then it'll be enough to make me realise that its not for me.

Time will tell. :(

My hats off to you sir.

I went back to rugby aged 30 after a 12-year break, during which I just played a bit of social footy and the odd bit of golf.

I was a bit like you, thinking "I wonder if I still can..". I was weighing up between rugby or getting seriously back into golf, and figured I'd have the rest of my life to play golf, but only a few years to play rugby to a decent level.

Took the plunge and was really glad I did. I surprised myself that I still had the core skills, and the hunger to work hard in the gym and at training. I started back at a new rugby club in a new town from where I'd played before, with a view to just playing 3rd and 4ths, but pretty soon got addicted and was working really hard to get in the 1sts. A pretty life-affirming experience when you're the wrong side of 30.

I did another 4 seasons before I got tired of getting smashed to pieces and went back to golf!

My view: go for it.
