Didn't play much over winter - here and there but back on the grind now with regular practice and my back is constantly aching. No sharp pain just a dull ache from being bent at the hips all the time.

Please tell me it gets better? Don't remember it taking this long to get back in the swing of things - sign of getting older I guess...

I have suffered with a terrible back it went so badly I couldn't get out of bed twice in 6 months so I took action. Saw a Physio and they gave me a simple set of daily stretches and I do 10 mins before work and 10 mins before bed. Its worked a treat. Also got a standing desk that goes up and down. Do you work in an office?

A less flippant answer, something I need to do. Warm up your back before you play with some stretches and exercises. To really help then use a bit of deep heat or Voltarol. Hit within yourself for the first few holes as well until you are fully loose. Accept you will never be able to bend and swing like Rory. To try it will just bring a world of pain.

Thanks chaps, theres some comfort in knowing I'm not alone.

I will always hit the range before a round to loosen up taking it easy to start but I'm going to look into some exercises stretches as well I think.

In terms of actual relief from the pain rather than preventative there are some excellent heat patches that you stick to the afflicted area. They heat to a warm glow and really reduce pain and increase flexibility. I found them much better than voltarol. If that don't work proper codeine tablets do. Bit moorish though :whoo:

have you done much exercise over the winter?
Because a back ache generally leads from weakness in the lower back and legs.
Ensure you stretch off your muscles before and after a round. (general stretches, quads, hamstrings, calfs, back stretch, rotation stretches) This will help a boat load!

Also I do yoga - its helped me a load. Might be worth a go!

get on you tube there are yoga excersizes for golfers .
do some every day in the morning , but the best way if watching tv do some while adverts come on for 3 mins it's amazing how many reps you can do in an evening.

This is like the first training session after a close season it takes time to get back to full fitness .
Try this it really does work.

and that my dear is the future for tash. With the amount of adverts i have to watch during corra and the dales i will be ripped within a month.

I had a light workout this week nothing crazy but after today's round I'm knackered but not as bad as last week.

Pre round stretches definitely worth doing, thanks chaps.

Going to try and get a couple of workouts a week done along with some stretching.

as someone whos a bit of a sicknote ive started doing pilates the last few weeks, excellent for gaining movement in the back and hips and greater strength in the core, all very helpful to golf, plus i now have a set of very brief exercises to do before playing to make sure i have full range of movement.

the downside is its gonna take a while until i have the strength to be able to maintain that range of movement over 4 hrs which is the biggest issue i have currently (apart from my shonky swing and destructive mental approach haha)
