I will be playing Pwllheli GC this coming Sunday 8th June. I have never played the course before and would be interested to hear from anyone who has played there and may be able to offer any advice.

I may also have the opportunity of playing Mere GC this coming Saturday and would be interested in the same.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Rick.

Played Pwllheli once. So-so front 9 which is parkland, back 9 is very nice original links holes which are hard and fast with gorse etc. Not overly hard but a fair test of golf. If the wind blows it will play a lot harder.
Back 9 is worth the visit.

I played Mere about 6 or 7 years ago and it's a superb course. Quite tough with loads (loads) of bunkers! The thing that I remember most about it was the condition...absolutely fantastic, with fairways that were like carpets. The greens were very good too. I'd love to play it again but unfortunately don't find myself in that neck of the woods very often. You won't be disappointed if you visit it.

Thanks Smiffy,
I hope I get the invitation to play then! There is a festival (not sure what that means) at Mere this weekend and I may get invited to play from a member of the club. All very last minute so may or may not happen, but if I don't get to play tomorrow then I will definitely play there sometime this summer.

I may spoil things for you here, I played Mere last year and was very dissappointed. Some of the views on the last fews holes over the lake are stunning, but nothing springs to mind about the course which makes it live up to the hype. I'm not far from Mere so it was always THE course to play and talk about, but now i've played it I don't know what all the fuss was about. Maybe I was expecting too much from it but I wouldn't rush to play it again. it was just a normal private course.

Looks like I'm on to play Mere after all, so I've got a great weekend of golf ahead of me. The weather is forecast to be pretty dreadful so I won't see either course in benign summer playing conditions, but that's the luck of the draw I guess.

Like you intherough, I don't live far from Mere; just 15 minutes away. I've been waiting for the opportunity to play there for many years so I will report back in the week as to how I found the place. Incidently, another course in the area I hadn't played and always meant to was Sandiway GC. http://www.sandiwaygolf.co.uk
That lived up to the high expectations I had of it when I played there in the Autumn of last year. A great course in excellent condition and a great test of golf. So my best hope is that Mere leaves the same impression on me

Yet another course in my area and closer again is Delamere Forest GC http://www.delameregolf.co.uk/ . I've played here a few times and it is in my top two favourite UK courses.

Have to say I enjoyed my day at Mere. Perhaps the combination of good company with a good course made the day that much better even if it rained for the first 8 holes. I found the course to be in good shape, even though the day we played was the last day of a week long festival of golf.

While the layout of the course isn't the best in the area, it can certainly be called a quality course, and was very well maintained and played well. As has already been noted, the back nine became more and more interesting. A thumbs up from me!

Pwllheli was a bit disappointing. When we arrived at 10.00 it was obvious there had been considerable rain as all the fairways in view from the clubhouse held a lot of large puddles of standing water. It had rained very hard the day before, and it seemed the drainage was unable to clear the residue of water a day later.

Although it was rather unsightly, it didn't really hamper our game, as relief was always available fairly close to any given water soaked lie.

The front nine are actually the front seven; the eighth tee is found back by the clubhouse where the course turns from a mediocre parkland course into an attractive and testing links course. It then returns to parkland for the last couple of holes.

I'm sure on a sunny dry warm day it would look more appealing, but the course is never going to be a stunner. The course comprises of three par three holes, all the rest being generally short par fours with no par fives. The club house looked a bit shabby and in need of refurbishment, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming, with excellent views of the course and Tremadog bay from the upstairs lounge.

An excellent weekend all the same with a good variety of golf thrown in!

I can't honestly answer that Pete as Saturday was the first time I've played the course. The few people I know there, and others that I've subsequently met, have also joined Sandiway GC. It could well be that they then have the option to play either course depending on the weather, or course condition or tee availability.
Mere have recently been granted planning permission to expand the business with an eighty bedroomed hotel. This may well effect the playability of the course even further.
