hit the ball TOO well?

Played Saturday at my 9 hole home course in our winder League. It's an academy course and as there was bunker practice going on around the first green we started on the second.

It's a par 3 at 210 yards in the summer. In Winder we play off a mat near the red tee at 170 but due to some work on the course even this is 20 yards further forward. So, 150 to the front of the green which is about 5 iron for me.

I step onto the tee feeling very loose and just wanting to get my ball around the green avoiding the massive bunker left and the deep on right.

I swing easy and smooth and the ball takes into the air on a great line - but I caught the damn thing so well it carried the 150 to the front of the green, the 15 yards of the green and the 5 yards of rough behind, then another 10 yards before slapping down OOB!!

First shot and I'm 3 off the tea! Never really recovered mentally from that shot and posted a truly shocking score - 11 points over all 9 with 4 points after paring the hardest hold on the course!

You'll always hit the best shots relaxed and usually with minimal effort. Look at ladies on their tour and how easily they seem to swing and how far they get it out there. If we could all find a way of making slow, compact 3/4 swings instead of what we (or at least I) do then we'd all hit it further and straighter

Every now and again I completely air-mail a green. It's that 1 in 500 times when I hit it as flush as it's possible to hit it. Trouble is the ball goes about 30yards too far.

It sometimes happens from the rough (flier) but I noticed this weekend I was overclubbing quite often and put it down to the warmer weather.

Made me quite happy that I'll soon be able to use my 'normal' club distances rather than hitting 1 more into every green. :)

I had this at the weekend!!

The 4th at our course is a 157 yard par 3. 5 Iron gets me toward the middle to back of the green leaving an up hill putt (depending on hole location).

Hit the sweetest 5 iron, pitched off the back of the green and ran for a good 6 or so yards further on, just stopping in the rough in front of a drainage ditch. I must have hit it at least 170. Managed to scramble a 4 so not too bad a result considering my mental state.

I'll probably take a 6 iron next time and end up short of the green

Well thanks for confirming that it's not just me!

And Imurg - I love the 'air-mail a green' - that's finally got me smiling at this memory rather than cursing so once again I'm looking forward to my next time out rather than being on a downer about it! :-)
