I played in a "pro/am" comp a few years ago, the pro we were playing with was a young assistant from a club in Sussex. He didn't play particulary well that day, and he was moaning like mad about the state of the greens. The mate and I that were playing with him didn't really enjoy his company but were very surprised when he invited us over to play at his course a few weeks later. As we hadn't played the course before we accepted.

We arrived at the alloted time and teed off. There was one particular hole on the front 9, a par 4 with a lake in front of the green. It was about 300 yards in total length and the idea was to knob a 7 iron or something off the tee and knock over onto the green. The pro said he regularly "went for it".

When we got to the tee there was a fourball already on the green, the pro put his ball down and said "this will speed them up" and proceeded to hammer a drive which thumped down into the green between the four guys and go out through the back. If that ball had hit one of them it would have seriously injured them. I have never, ever, been so embarrassed on a golf course in my life, and couldn't believe that the pro at a club would do something like that. It ruined the rest of our round (for my friend and I at least) but the pro was grinning about it for a good few holes later.

The tosser wasn't there a couple of years later. I sometimes wonder what happened to the prat. I hope, deep down, that somebody bigger than him smashed a driver into his face.

Dam, I've been found out
:(
Seriously, I would have stopped him hitting it and if I couldn't, I would have verbally ripped his head off and reported him.
Just not cricket

Have I ever witnessed worse manners than that? Does Vig pulling his trousers down and coiling one out onto the middle of the fairway count? :D

Only joking :D

That is shocking behaviour, and from one who is meant to be so learnered and uphold the laws & etiquette of the game and present an image that others should aspire to is quite simply beyond belief!

How very arrogant of him ;)

I would have excused myself and walked off the course. Endangering people isn't the way I like to play the game.
I would have (minimum) put a letter of complaint in to the club secretary.

No excuse for that at all, also if I am playing and the people behind keep playing up to us i will turn round on the first incident and raise my arms gesturing to them, if they do it again I just pick the ball up and throw it into the rough, a ball in the back of the head could easily kill some one and I would rather it not be me.

Its a little different if someone (even a pro now and then) hits one longer than normal and ends up with such a result, but knowing in advance that he could reach and deliberately indicating the intention to affect those on the green, is no more or less than a thug would do when deciding to bottle someone in a bar just for the sake of it. Only difference is that the thug would be locked up.

I would definately have picked his ball up and made sure he saw me throwing it into the lake! What an idiot...would he still have been smiling if he'd killed one of the guys on the green?
Hope he got the sack eventually!

A course in Sussex, par 4 300yds ish. lake in front of green, lay up to lake,7 iron over? Sounds like my course, Hassocks, the par4 ninth. If it is, I'm sure the t**t has long gone. Do you remember his name?

Golfmmad.

It wasn't Hassocks Golfmmad.
It was Cottesmore.
I can't remember the guys name, all I can remember was he was Scottish (and that's NOT a pop at our Scottish members).
It was a few years ago now....

Thanks for reply Smiffy, it's put my mind at rest!
Having been involved at Hassocks for approx 8 years, I would have been surprised from the pro's that have been there, if it were one of them.
