What was it like?
was it a blade or a cavity back?

I personally havn't.

the closest I've gotten to is a Bladed 3 Iron from the 70's/80's.
It was really hard to hit as the head was barely bigger than the ball.

Yes, a Ping Zing (cavity) with a regular graphite shaft.
It was a lovely club, not my own, but quite easy to hit off a tee. Not so easy off the deck.

I hit a Ping Eye 1 iron in the late eighties. It wasn't mine. It seemed to require an awful lot of 'set up' before you could hit it - for not much return.
I do own a 2 iron which is brilliant and I get some great results with it. Padraig stated that no self respecting golfer should own one though...

Yep, until recently had a bladed 1 iron in the garage. If I pured it, it was fine, but on average it was pretty awful. Great for chipping out from under trees, when you 100% don't want to get it airborn. also great for low shots into the wind. However, I play in Watford, so how windy does it get?

Nailing a bladed 1 iron is the best feeling in golf if you get the chance at least have a go before them and 2 irons disappear forever - Jack Niclaus's 3 favorite shots were all 1 irons enough said

I used to have a Mizuno TP-9 1 iron...you could practically shave with it. To be honest I never used it in competition and on the range i never once pured the darn thing - complete waste of time.

Thinning a range ball on a cold morning with a bladed 1 iron was an experience best forgotten :p

I had a ping eye2 1 iron years ago and I loved it. played off 9 then and could cream it. On tight driving holes it always found the fairway.I also used it from the fairway as I was rubbish with a 3 wood off the deck...still am so I don't carry one anymore.

Hit various 1 and 2 irons over the years, but not recently. Had Ping, Mizuno and Ben Hogan models in the late 80s/early 90s.

The Ping Eye (ideally in copper) is the daddy of the 1 irons.

I had a Maxfli Australian blade 1 iron in my bag for a long time as youngster. I could hit it quite well too, tiny head but a lovely long and low flight, great in the wind.

Can't say I miss it greatly, hybrids are just so easy to hit.

Never hit a 1 Iron but I have hit a mates Titleist 2 Iron quite a few times and can hit it quite well better than a hybrid. Just can't get on with Hybrids for some reason I have a Taylor Made Rescue and can't hit a barn door with it.

I had a maxfli Australian one iron too. It was a great club and at the time playing as well as I did and being so young there was no fear or negativity in pulling it out. Mind you get it wrong and your body shook all the way to wherever it ended up. I did have a Wilson cavity back (fat shaft) for a while which was a lot easier to hit but glad hybrids came along to make life much easier

Used to play with a 70 year old ex-Army Major - the nicest, most polite Gentleman you could ever meet.
Played off 28 but he could hit a 1 iron 220 yards straight - every time.
God alone knows how. I tried it once. Managed about 150 with it.

Still got my full set of Ping Eye2's, 1 though lob wedge. Played the 1 (and 2) off the tee throughout the 90's, won a couple of long drive prizes with it (on the fairway is all you need!). Took the 2 out for a couple of rounds earlier this year (even had it regripped). Still love it, but it's not as versatile as today's rescues - light rough, fairway and the like.

Happy memories though.
