It's something I struggle with most years being Comp Secretary in our club. Trying to plan around weather is a nightmare at the best of times.

The past week up to yesterday has been pretty cold but try here at home but rain seems to be on the way again.

I was at the course last night and as we have a long weekend coming up we have an Open Team of 3 and an Open Singles running for the weekend.

Trouble is that the wet stuff is forcast. The course is in good nick but the ball is still picking up a bit of mud in the rough and I'm certain parts it "May" plug. But you'd have to be well off the beaten track.

It seems that every time the course gets a break it inevitably gets knocked back again with rain.
I was hoping that I could start qualifying rounds from this week. I've got every limb in my body crossed that the rain doesn't stop this from happening yet again.
Seems like we are just going to have to get used to wet summers.

we are usually on pick and place until the Findley which was last weekend.. normal comp rules.

one thing i have noticed around a few of the tee's and between greens and paths have all been hollow tined and heavily sanded. none have been marked GUR. I don't fancy landing in one of these area's.

Six inches still at ours on fairways. Big charity comp on this Saturday. Heavy rain currently forecast for tonight and steady rain on Friday. With the going still soft to heavy in parts I can see this being called off. I hope so. I hate winter golf.

Still preferred lies at ours... The soggiest parts of our course we're finally drying out so a pain in the bum to find out its gonna be horrible again.

The answer to the first issue is simple, post a local rule allowing relief for plugged balls through the green that applies year round if that is the only issue you anticipate with the course.

Why do you have rounds be non-qualifying just because of placing? I thought that so long as the course is otherwise set up normally that competitions before end of April should be ran as qualifying even if placing is in effect.

We were still placing on Saturday but have had decent weather, so will be back to playing as lies presumably for the Medal on both days this weekend.

Yea, I got back home from my travels yesterday so decided to finish work early and go out for 9 holes, course is in superb condition, ready for the removal of LC&P, today its sleet and snow...
I think clubs need to back off the rigidity of comps though, Play them when the course allows and throw in a load of singles stableford comps when it does not (I hate enforced comp day 4bbbs etc).

Yes we stll have them and normally do well into May. Main problem is lack of growth on Fairways. Just been to cold / wet to get enough to lift them.

We get a lot of visitors and on balance I think preferred lies help in the early / late season to even out any ropey lies caused by wear / water damage.

Need a couple of warm weeks to get things moving.
