I've just bought a S1 approach GPS watch (which looks like an ultimate golfing boys toy if ever I've seen one) but wanted to know if any of you have used one and what you thought?

Have I just discovered the gadget that is going to save me a ridiculous amount of shots and severely reduce my handicap or have I just annoyed the missus again buying a £140.00 watch?! (please don't be option 2....)

As a relatively new forumer I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Had one for about a year and it has helped my game. Does exactly what it says on the tin giving front middle and back yardages without over complicating things. It measures shots (which is a good thing because believe me you cant hit the ball as long as you think you can) and can track total distance walked.

Well worth the purchase, Enjoy!

Don't use one myself GripandRip but my mate does and he swears by it. It's helped him loads mainly due to problems that he has judging distances due to an eye problem.
I reckon if it helps then it's option 1, if in 2 months you don't really use it, well flowers are usually a good way of getting past option 2... :D

I've got one and I love it. Gives you the yardage to the front/middle/back of the green, lets you measure the distance for shots. It doesn't have the features of some GPS devices such as distance to hazards etc so is only useful for your approach shot to the green but much less faff which suited me - stand over the ball, glance at wrist, select club, fire ball onto green, hole putt! Job done!

Beware endless jokes from playing partners about what time it is etc.....

friend has one and pretty accurate, trouble is I keep thinking he doesnt want to be on the course or has somewhere urgent to go to as he keeps looking at his watch

I've had one since HID presented it as an unexpected Christmas gift. Great for judging approach shots to green but obviously doesn't help with distance to hazards etc. I like it and believe it has helped with club selection.

Agree with comment about measuring shots - GPS has knocked about 30 yards off my tee shots:mmm:

Brilliant uncomplicated bit of kit & a real shot saver.
Mine is fantastic, once you have spent a couple of hours on the practice field setting your club yardages, you are away.
No need to start looking for markers or judging distances, just a quick glance of the watch, pull out the correct club & fire it at the green, after you have used it, you will wonder how you ever managed before.

I have to say I like the idea but can't even wear a wrist watch when playing so no chance with the S1 as it looks quite chunky.
Similarly (I don't want to hijack the thread) has anyone any views on the Skycaddie SG 2.5? Been eyeing one for a while now.

Got one and really like it. Nice and discreet, I didnt fancy looking through a range finder and knobbing it 10 yards :)

I am right in thinking from this, you can programme distances in for clubs, so instead of it saying a length it says the required club, ie instead of saying 135 yards it will say pw?

As far as I know, it just allows you to determine how far you have hit a particular shot - so distances can be 'calibrated'. So legal for competition. Doesn't have Wentworth West FWIW!

Got ya, I've got the mars100, £120 new comes with 10 course downloads free, any additional downloads are £1.25. Great little unit with no annual fees.

Might seem a stupid question but how does it know what course your on? And also which tees your playing off?
I've never used one or a range finder but I understand a range finder you just look through.

It finds courses in the vicinity of your location and then gives you the options. You select your course and off you pop.
It measures to the green, so doesn't matter what tee's you're going off from.
