Played a nice friendly game today with HTL and ademac at the Downshire near Wokingham. The cpurse was fully open although every tee was off a mat. It was a bit boggy in places and the greens were horrendous. They were long and very very rutted so that putting was a bit of a lottery. I had a 4 foot putt that bobbled and missed the ghole by nearly 6 inches to the left.

I've played with HTL before but it was the first time I had met ademac. We all hit a few balls on the range and he declared an unofficial handicap of "around 22". Having been caught out too many times before we took his first answer and he and HTL played off 22 and I was off 14.

It was apparent early on that we may have been too generous with ademac's 22 as he rattled in several par (net birdies) in the first few holes. HTL was as steady as ever especially with his 3 wood off the tee and now he has got his new Wilson Spine driver working he will be a dark horse for the Ascot meet especially as his irons and putting are pretty decent too.

I have to say I had an exceptional ball striking day but couldn't score due to a ropey chipping game and not being able to putt on the poor greens. My personal highlight would have to be the approach from 113 on the 6th to a green sloping from back to front. I hit a stunning 9 iron which pitched 5 foot from the hole and then screwed back with professional like backspin. I didn't get up and down as the ball came right off the green but the spin proved the quality of strike was there.

I can't say what the others will think were there highlights but ademac hit a great chip on 7 to a foot from deep cabbage and HTL bombed several 250+ yard drives with his new big dog. It was nip and tuck all the way. Ademac went out in 20, HTL in 18 and I was out in 17 (blobbed the 2nd after hooking my drive). It remained tight on the back 9 although ademac did have 2 horror holes that cost him victory. In the end, I was left with a 5 footer on the last for a par net birdie and 3 points which would have won the game but it slid by and HTL and I both finished on 35 points.

It was a shame the course was so wet and the greens so bad but I think we'll be back in the summer to play it again. I'm just happy to be playing on a full 18 and on proper (ish) greens and well chuffed with my driving and especially my irons which were peppering the flags which is a highly unusual occurence for me. The boys tucked into a burger and chips and a beer and we had a great chat about GM and the forum. A good day all round.

Good write up mate. Forgot to mention my ace shot on the 7th, downhill 140yrds to 4 foot but ill let that slip :)

I really enjoyed today and cant wait to do it again, looking forward to another good game on the weekend.

After reflecting on today its obvious I left lots of shots on the course due to my woe full chipping from -30 yards. Need to work on that and transferring my weight onto my right side to get some more smooth power.

Really do need to say thank you to the forum for telling me off for swinging too wildly (trying to kill the ball), I am now clubbing up, shortening my swing and just trying to complete my swing and its paying off, however, I sometimes launch one way past the green i.e. 2nd hole par 5 I tried to knock a 9 iron 140 and shot into the back of the green about 150ish.

Glad you had a god day guys, sounds like I should have joined you, instead of playing at home.

If you read of any greens staff being tortured to death, that will be me. Don't tell the fuzz.

I would just like to say thanks to HTL and Homer for a good round of golf today.
To be honest, I was a bit nervous about meeting some forum guys and playing a round with them. I declared an honest h/c but then proceded to get off to a flyer!

I told the guys that it wouldn't last and I was Right! :(
I was leading for a good while, then it all went a bit Pete Tong!
Anyway, I really enjoyed the day, I thought the course was good for january, and the guy's were spot on and made me feel really welcome!
My highlight of the day would have to be finding my tee shot on a par 3, JUST in a little stream, I dropped out on the other side of the stream and chipped it over a bunker to within 4 ft?, then putted up for a bogey 4, but with a wet ball, I had to be happy!
I saw Homer hit an awesome fairway wood off the deck to within about 4ft? What a shot!
I stood behind him and watched it all the way, an absolute pearler!
HTL off the tee was very impressive to be fair, and if a couple of his putts would have been a little softer, they would have dropped and he would have won the day!

Another shot that I must confess to being impressed by was Homers approach to the 6th! He hit a lovely nine iron in and it seemed to stop dead! BUT, he obviously put too much backspin on it and it roll off to the front edge, about 6ft!
(I know backspin looks cool but sometimes you just don't want it!)

To sum it all up, a decent course, beautiful weather and top fellas to have a round with! Thanks guy's, Can't wait until Ascot, unless we sort something before then!
