Had a great afternoon at Hankley Common with Drive4show yesterday. Cemented the place as one of my favourite sites for a game of golf.

Beautiful afternoon, although pretty breezy we scooted round off the purple tees which really give a number of holes some real teeth. Fairway watering means that it’s not too firey although if you do get off the fairway the rough is pretty whispy and the heather is scorched and not at its most brutal or attractive.

The greens were a decent pace but not overly quick, they did look a bit fluffy and had a fair bit of grain on certain greens. They will be super quick and smooth when I go back next week for their mid am!!!

Just an idyllic spot to play golf, the place has a huge feel and sprawls over so much ground, you get the feeling of playing alone on many of the holes.

Only downside was not being able to get a beer @ just after 7 on a beautiful sunny evening - Bar shut!!

Blissful place - unless the Chinooks are busy!

Purples huh! Makes even the 2nd a tough hole! Did you struggle to find the new one hiding in the trees and heather on 10?

Couple of nice Pubs nearby, but once loaded and in the car, it doesn't seem the thing to do.

Popped in for a gander a couple of weeks back one evening at about 7:30pm. Glorious evening - we'd been at the local pub (Duke of Cambridge) for a bite to eat - clubhouse completely shut up.

Yes indeed, cracking afternoon at a stunning golf course. Made all the better by bumping into a couple of mates on the 3rd and pairing up for a little match, me and Robo against them....God my partner is good ;) (he is way to modest to tell you all he shot -1 off the back tees!)

Good grub and food in the Duke of Cambridge afterwards, is there a better way to spend a Monday? :)

Great course, but hate the fact the Clubhouse closes at 7.00, same at Liphook. Means you have to change in the carpark, one of my pet hates. Duke of Cambridge does good food though, and the Barley Mow is a lovely village pub looking over Tilford green.

Hankley is probably the closest Club to me, but even if I won the lottery I would not join. Bit stuffy for me.

Gone and wasted them all 2weeks before the competition!!! :(

Beer always tastes better when provided by the losers!! :)

5miles and 15mins for me - but likewise - not sure I'd join.

I'd join like a shot, shortly after I bought a musty smelling tweed jacket, some mustard cords and some suitable neck wear.

Its a top course, but does feel like the kind of place that, if you fell asleep in your soup no-one would bat an eyelid!!

Lol.

Good (local) course, but not worth the money even if I had it.

I'd join in a shot.

Was there for an hour prior to playing yesterday (due to D4S's dodgy satnav) and no sign of tweed or people in the afterlife.

There were even folk playing in shorts and ankle socks!!!! How thoroughly modern!!:)

Don't understand how you can say that, where are you going to get a better course in Surrey for £1,450pa?

if you can also hear the loud ticking of a grandfather clock that sounds the place for me:smirk:

As a 40 years+ local resident and having played nearly all courses in the area, I can easily say it! ;) Add on the x3 joining fee and its an amount I wouldn't pay. Probably stems from the fact I've always been a social golfer and not a membership golfer. Friends who are in a similar position say the same and joined Hindhead and West Surrey instead.

As near neighbours, you can toss a coin between Hankley and Hindhead. Factor in the price and social aspect, then you have, IMO, a better proposition at Hindhead.

If you are joining a club as a long term commitment then I don't think the joining fee is such a big issue (even £4.5k). As courses, Hankley is FAR superior to Hindhead, it's not even a close comparison. I've played all the top courses in Surrey and there are only 3 or 4 better than Hankley.

Like Therod, if I lived in the area I would join in an instant.
