I use Wilson Di7 irons and they are standard length
I always place my hands quite far down the grip
no matter what iron I use I am about 5ft 4"
I went around with a member from my club who I have not played with before
now we said the reason I don't get any distance is because of how far down
I grip the club he suggested I would be better off having them shortened

Now call me thick bought what difference will not make

I'd say go and see a pro to find out the best course of action. If you are not playing with fitted clubs, it'd be worth getting someone to "customise" yours to your needs.

Chances are a cut down club or gripping it down the grip would be the least of your worries if you have standard lies on your irons.

Do you know Uttoxeter G.C.? I've just been looking at it to use my greenfree voucher.

I only started playing golf about six months ago so sorry I don't know that course but I live about 15 miles from Uttoxeter

but what I am trying to say is what difference would it make having them cut short.

I don't see how shortening the club shaft length will make any difference. :D
If you grip down the shaft or shorten it, it is the same thing. The distance between the clubhead and your hands is what matters. There are many short golfers who can hit the ball a long way. Ian Woosenham springs to mind.

thanks Clive, that's what I was trying to tell the member I was playing with, that shortening the clubs would make no difference.

Not being funny Mansell, but have you thought of using "ladies" clubs?
No, I don't mean pink or purple ones, some ladies clubs are indistinguishable from mens. I have just purchased a set for my lad who is 12 and in between junior sets and mens. These are generally a little bit shorter than mens and a good quality set made by one of the "bigger" names might be just what you need mate.

Smiffy you are spot on mate, because when I was looking for irons
I looked at a set of ladies irons and apart from them being shorter
the only other noticeable difference was on the shaft(graphite dark blue) printed "Ladies"

You could ask a pro to check your posture. If you are too 'bent over' in your stance you will tend to grip te golf club lower. Also if you are 5ft4 and using standard length shafts, they are more than likely not sitting flush with the ground. This will effect your ball striking, and will slowly...bt surely....drive you mad.

I would suggest going to your pro and getting the lie checked out as I'm sure they won't be sitting correctly for you. Its much cheaper to make them more upright than to buy a new set. Alternatively a C/F fitting would sort the problem. The problem with cutting shafts down is that it will inevitably affect the swing weight and may cause more errant shots than before.

How is cutting them down any different from gripping lower?
The effective club length is going to be the same in either case and presumably swing weight is calculated using the full length of the shaft.

If you grip down the weight remains the same but if you cut the club down then the club weight will be changed.

I'm not sure how much difference it would make but manufacturers are always telling us they have shaved tiny amounts off here and there so surely it would have an effect?

Antony Kim grips down and it seems to work for him!
