I have recently put in 3 cards for my handicap They were off the yellow tee's on a par 70 course, the 3 cards consisted of a 92, a 94 and a 96.

I am now awaiting a reponse from the secretary for the result of my handicap.

Do any of you wise forum members know how a handicap is generated from those 3 cards.

Thanks in advance, Liam

They will tkae all 3 cards and reduce anything over a double bogey to a double bogey i.e. an 8 score on a par 4 will become a 6 etc. When they have adjusted the 3 cards in this way they will give you a handicap based on your best card.
You don't say what the SSS of the yellow tees course is, par does not matter for handicaping.
If your SSS is also 70 and your 3 scores are not adjusted you would be off 22 or so e.g. 92-70 = 22.

depends....if you were at my club (they use the 1 card (best of the 3) system) they'd take your 92, chop down any triple bogeys to doubles, and apply the random criteria of "considering the overall picture" (sounds like BS to me!)
if the sss is 68, I'd guess around 24.
if it was me doing it, i'd also look at how many pars you'd made. if you made a good few and blew up on the odd hole, i'd go nearer 22.

Erhm, just a thought but I was under the impression that when playing for your handicap it had to be of the White's, can someone clarify?!?
Would be a shame if Liam had to do it all again, but better to be prepaired........

I've played for a h'cap twice (1994 and 2007), never been near a white tee!!! to get my h'cap.

there is a different SSS off the whites to the yellows on most courses, so it can be worked out off either. the main reason most are done off the whites is because the cards have been scored on a proper weekend (medal/s'ford) round.

at my old club weekend medals were off the whites, at my new club, they can be off white/yellow/mats, whatever.

?????? dunno, could be wrong

Nobody should get more than 18 as a handicap, one shot per hole.

out of curiousity, why do you think that???

It would hardy be fair if a happy hacker who goes round 25 over as a rule was playing stableford with a scratch player would it?

Sorry but that would be rank daft in my eyes.

We have a handicap system in competition snooker. Would it be right for fred blogs the club player to only get a 20 point start agaist ronnie?

The happy hacker should go away and improve before playing in a comp with a scratch golfer. So the scratch golfer spends all his time learning the game and along comes a happy hacker and expects to get more than one shot per hole. I dont think that is right.

you can't play medals at our club until you've got a handicap, so therefore can't use a medal round to get one. Also, my first 'carded' round was with the handicap secretary and we played off vellows.

i got my h/p by playing in two medal comps and a bounce game with a member off the whites, so maybe different rules for different clubs
