I played yesterday with a few fellas from work and as we where going round one was keepi g everones scores and kept saying "you got 4 for 3 at that hole " or some other numbers , i only ever go round and score how many shots i go round in , i think from what i looked at he was scoring stableford? . Am i right in saying that assuming im a 28hc , i get +1 shot on every hole plus an extra shot on holes stroke index 1-10? , ive been trying to read up , next question , how would i know to take shots away from my handicap? I know its not official but a rough work out will do for me at the moment if i can work it out

cheers in advance

Yep. Sounds like Stableford. Worth learning and applying. It can even turn some bad rounds into good ones!

Depending on the course, start reducing your handicap when you start scoring more than 36 Stableford points.

On the Scorecard, there should be a number for SSS (Standard Scratch Score) which rates the course for the tee you play off. If it matches Par for the course, no need to adjust. If it's 1 less that Par, then 37 points is your base point etc.

Oh god im lost already lol , better get reading up

OK, lets try and explain it.

You get 2 points for a net par

So for you off 28 handicap you receive 1 one allowance on holes 11 thro 18 (thats stroke index, not hole number)

you receive 2 shots on holes 1-10 (again that's stroke index)

therefore if you make a 5 on a par 4 (indexed 11-18) you score 2 points, if you make a 5 on a par 4 (indexed 1-10) you score 3 points

A 6 on a par 4 = 1 point (indexed 11-18)

Clear as mud ?

Cheers , getting there . So at what point would i start to reduce my handicap?

As said before when you start to score 36 points or more or you are shooting net below par.

Have a look at Scoresaver 2, its a good scoretracker and has the ability to adjust your handicap from the scores you input (its a free piece of software)
