So today is the first qualifier since I took over - Senior Ladies Medal. I have to DQ a player and have had 4 phone calls, 2 of which were asking me to do something other than that.

I can't, although actually I guess I can, but I won't (played off wrong markers) but I thought this was going to be an easy job

So to other secretaries - will I have to get used to being the bad gal??

Nobody will think you're the bad gal - unless you start making exceptions. If someone needs to be DQ'd just do it and they'll learn!

Good luck!

Thanks and what I decided long before the player herself rang me! I did in fact say that at least it was the first of the year and no excuses for not knowing the rules for the rest

You'll get a far worse reputation if you pick and choose what rules to adhere to. Apart from anything else no-one will know if they are coming or going and you open yourself wide open to favouritism claims. Play by the book, red pen everyone that transgresses and explain why. They'll get the message sooner or later especially if they return a good score

Second this ^

I go with Homer's post and Fyldewhite's post. Be consistent in your actions, if necessary make notes of what you did and why for certain unusual situations. You're certainly not going to be flavour of the month all the time that's for sure.

I've had to deal with some of our Juniors who have made serious mistakes and had to DQ them. As long as you explain what their mistake was and the reason you had to carry out your actions, according to the rules, then that's the fairest you can be, to all parties.

It's not an easy job, but it needs to be done properly and consistently.
