Hi,

Sorry but not a regular poster on here although I am a regular reader!!!

Have a quick question for everybody. Do you only submit cards from competitions for your handicap or will you hand in a card (signed obviously) from a regular round with friends? I only ask this as I found out at the weekend our club will only accept a competition card for a handicap cut. Frustrating as a couple of weeks ago, with no comps on at our club that weekend, I handed in a card several below my handicap to try and get cut. It was only when I queried it this weekend that I was told as a normal round doesn't have the "pressure that a competition has", my card was thrown in the bin. Annoying as I'm not too bothered about winning a comp but would like to get my handicap down.

You can hand in as many supplemental cards as you like at my course, but only comps count for handicaps alterations.

I have handed cards in from friendly games, even when they haven't been played on my "home" course, and have had my handicap adjusted under the old "rule 19"...
It can be done if you can prove you are regularly playing under you official handicap if you have a decent secretary. Going out, handicap wise, is another matter
;)

Casual cards count for zip at my gaff.

I agree that there isn't the pressure on casual games, you are rarely off the tips, the pins are more accessible, etc.

You also only put in the good cards, so there is no adjustment the other way.

I got my handicap at my club by handing in 3 cards from friendly rounds, signed by myself and my club member playing partner. I simply marked the cards "For handicap" and stapled them together.
Gave it a few days then saw my name appear on the club handicap sheet.
Alternatively, sign up to Howdidido.co.uk and you'll find your playing handicap on your club page.

Well yes, because you can't play in a competition until you have a handicap, so your three cards for the handicap will all be from friendly play, but the OP is talking about AFTER he's been given his handicap.

My old club would accept some cards, 24 handicap friend of mine scored 44 points one Sunday afternoon, took the card to the Secretary who agreed to cut him a shot, one week later however I shot 78 gross (off 14), we tried the same thing and he rather rudely told me where to go, which p*ssed me off no end and was one of the reasons I didn't continue my membership. He's left now, so I might try getting back in there.

Competitions only for handicap up here.

Most clubs in the area have at least 2 competitions a week, so you have plenty of scope to play for your handicap.

Mind you the club I started at in Hertfordshire used to take cards for general play, but they only had I comp a month.

Your club is not correct. Under CONGU rules, supplementary scores from cards marked out of competition play can count for handicap purposes, so long as they are properly declared in advance and subject to limits on the number submitted. Category 1 players are exempt from this facility.

Yes, this is true but it is worth noting that the idea of supplementary scores is to give people who for whatever reason do not have the opportunity to play in comps a chance to retain an "accurate" handicap. One of the requirements to do this is that you must have returned 6 or less qualifying scores in the previous full season, a requirement that would remove this facility from 90% of golfers at our club. It isn't just an "extra" opportunity to get some qualifying cards in for anyone who wants to although new players can do so in their first year.

you cant play off the whites in friendly knocks at our place so handing in cards is a waste of time plus if your a high handicapper wanting to come down do it the right way by winning something..

Geting rather leathery in places recently.

I put in one of these supplementary scores yesterday. First I heard was when there was a notice about it on the competitions board, and I know other local clubs do exactly the same. Google 'supplementary scores' and you will find a few clubs that use it.
