Your thoughts on what I should do would be appreciated...
I returned to golf at the end of last summer after years of back pain & operations, with very sporadic golf thrown in. Joined the local club and was awarded a handicap of 21 in October.
By Christmas I was comfortably playing to it and requested a cut of 3 strokes as it was getting embarrassing on the first tee, saying I was a 21 handicapper and and then driving forum distances ;)
Since then I have played a few time and been down the range a fair bit. My last 3 rounds have been 38, 41 and finally 47 points yesterday in pretty tough conditions.

I do have a pretty long game, and the course, even off the whites will always play to my advantage, (a numbers of sub 300yd par fours) so I'm not worried about not being able to play the course at competition length.

We don't have any qualifiers until spring and even then I will only be able to play one a month against 8+ casual rounds, However the knockouts start before then and I still have my regular games to play.

So, would you continue on 18, see how things go in the spring, but risk being a bandit come comps, especially the knock out.
Or would you go and have a chat with the secretary, with a view to another cut?
I can always take a gentlemans handicap for the social golf, but really don't want to have a handicap that I don't require.

Anyway, like I say your thoughts & experiences are welcome

Cheers

Have a chat with the HC sec and express your concerns

I have had people speak to me about their HC and request cuts etc at our place

Cheers for the replies guys.
Duncan you are right I had forgotten about them, however I do not understand the need for rudeness, the "the end" at the end of your post is unnecessary, rude and to be honest a bit childish.
I have been a registered member on this forum for a few years now, every time i start visiting regularly and start posting, the general rudeness, belittlement and unfriendliness shown by a small minority puts me off and I the disappear until I forget what it's like and come back. The above is just a tiny representation of the culture that exist here, allowing those who wish to feel superior, to have their little moments at the expense of others, who in all likelihood have just asked an honest question.
I am a subscriber to Golf Monthly, but I very much doubt I will be a visitor here again.
I am honestly surprised that the magazine is willing to put its name at the top of the page.

Surely you wont qualify for comps as your handicap will be inactive. Whether you can get the required number of supplemantary cards in before the entry closing time is another matter.

Didn't seem 'rude' to me!

Simply equivalent to 'End of Story', 'Simple as that', 'Job Done' or many more such phrases.

As far as I remember, if he was allocated his initial handicap in October it will remain active this year.

He was awarded a HC last year so it will be currently active

I also think you have misinterpreted Duncan's posting. I'm sure that his phrase "the end" just meant "job done".

this- every time

1. it's what the system is designed for
2. nothing else will have any impact anyway

the end

Your handicap will find its proper level in time. So long as you are not protecting your handicap for matchplay or big events, play your game and don't worry about what others say. These days players who can hit it 275 yards, not necessarily in the right direction, but can't putt or chip are found at every club.

Supplementaries are a good idea, probably your only good option until spring. Lob in a couple of 43 or 44 pointers and then ask the Handicap Sec. I expect he will listen then.

Fin.

Cheers, Duncan please accept my appologies, having a bad day, and as others have said hopefully I have misinterpreted your comment.

Cheers for the other responses, our handicap sec would cut me if I asked him to, was considering asking for a further couple of shots off, that way j could happily show I am protecting nothing, yet not do myself out of any chance of winning.
I will more than likely submit supplementary cards for the next couple of rounds...

As one of the most senior forummers (in age that is) I accept your apology on Duncan's behalf. That does not preclude any subsequent postings which might be genuinely rude.

First things first, as others have said, your handicap may now not have that important C against it o the handicap list. You need to get it "live" again by putting in three cards. Until that is dine, the rest is all semantics. Your three cards will get the handicap back to C status and then you can start working on that reduction you want. Remember, it's a lot harder to put a good score in when you have a card in your back pocket. Play regularly in comps at the start of next season and it'll find it's level very quickly.
