Like my username suggests I'm a new boy on here!

For 2011 I'm finally going to join a club, I've been putting if off for years but with a little overtime I should be able to afford it.... Just!

The two courses I have in mind are Hadley wood and south herts, want to get you honest opinions on both courses and which you would rate the better, have a feeling Hadley is the more exclusive with the better course so really thinking about joining there. So much history that goes with South herts along with a 9 hole practice course and being closer to my home might be the handier of the two courses.

interested to hear your thoughts, which do you rate the best???

Welcome to the forum

Not played either for a while, both very decent courses and if pushed think Id prefer South Herts. Will try and ask my Dad his thoughs for you, hes certain to have played both this year and knows many of the members at both

Welcome to the forum. For me it would be about accessibility first. My club is very good as it is a private members club and you can just roll up (competitions permitting). Thre are other courses locally I could join and cheaper) but they all have to pre-book times which come the summer months after work is a drag. Are both good courses a good test of your golf. If South Herts is isn't going to test you regularly then go to Hadley. If however you are just going to Hadley for the prestige then I'm wondering if you are going for style over substance

Thanks, if you could find that out it would be most helpful. I'm playing them both in a few weeks when the weather picks up but Im always interested to get other peoples opinions...

Very true.

I've heard one of the clubs, I won't mention which one, has an extremely large membership compared to the other. This, unfortunately in some ways, would have a major bearing in which club I decide to join. One aspect I would immensely dislike is if I had to fight to get on the timesheet, e.g. call or book online your tee time 2 weeks in advance. I join a club to play at my leisure, this does not mean booking tee times and then not bothering to show up, but more ringing up on a Wednesday when I know for certain I'm definitely free the following weekend to play and slot in somewhere in the morning, granted I realise every weekend mornings are clubs busy periods but a member should be able to slot in somewhere on the timesheet.

If there are any members of either club lurking around feel free to message me

Aplogies for delay in reposting. Finally spoke to my dad and his comments were as follows:

South Herts: its an ok golf course, nothing special though the greens can be fast and tricky (and often are for comps). Off the course, very relaxed and a very active social side to the club

Hadley Wood: A nice course and usually in good condition, though a fair chunk of the membership can be a bit snooty and the social side isnt as good

When I asked him which he would join, he said depending on location, the best course in that bracket in the area for him is Brookmans Park (maybe too far out for you?), so that may be worth looking at

Cheers for the reply.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Hadley Wood is by far the better course but South Herts is your more friendly club with a better social side to things. I hope South Herts is well kept throughout the year. Was hoping there would be a few members from there on here who could help.

Brookmans would be a little too far out for unfortunately, it does look nice.

I think it could well be South Herts, being beside a tube line helps. It looks a nice set up, although the one thing that would put me off is the large membership, it would have to make getting a tee time on weekends difficult…
