Popped into my local Golf Shop today to try and get my swing speed measured as I'm after a new driver and am unsure of whether to go stiff or regular shaft.

I tried a number of drivers on the simulator including the Ping G15 regular flex, i15 stiff flex, Taylor Made R9 Regular, and a couple of others.

My average ball speed was coming out at 142mph with a carry of 232yds avg, and a launch angle of 11-12 degrees.

It didn't tell me my clubhead speed but the guy there said the ball speed would be approx. 1.5 times the club speed. So i'm guessing clubhead speed is around 94mph.

My favourite club out of them all was the G15. It was going like a dream

Should i go for a regular or stiff flex shaft with a clubhead speed of arounf 94mph. I'm guessing regular.

Thanks

They only had the G15 in regular. My G10 is a stiff and i'm not sure it's right for my swing speed. The regular on the G15 felt better.

I'm no expert but I've heard that once you go over 100mph you might be looking at a stiff shaft.

It might sound like a silly question, but why didn't you just hit the G15 with a stiff shaft too?

Sneds, I too am no expert but I thought I read that the 100mph bit was for clubhead speed rather than ball speed.
I'm also no expert on scientific facts & figures so this could be a ridiculous statement to make :p

Yes, that is what I meant sorry it wasn't clear. OP said he estimated his swing speed to about 94mph and that's what i was commenting on x

Why does your G10 feel wrong? Whats your standard shot shape and bad one.

Sorry, maybe that's the wrong term "wrong".

A bad shot with my G10 is pushed low right. A good shot is a nice 10-15yrd draw.

According to ping you sit on the lower side of the stiff shaft but higher middle of the regular, better to be in the middle than try to swing a bit harder every time.

Is that why a bad iron shot for me is also pushed right?

It might be, my poor shot is a push and my clubs are reg (except irons) this is due to me not releasing well rather then the clubs.

I would say you are probably ok with what you have - they may just not be ideal - if every shot is a push and you are swinging well then I would look to a pro for advice.

Basing shaft stiffness just on swing speed is too simple because:

1. Considerable differences between what different brands regard as Regular or Stiff. For example, a Grafalloy Blue Reg plays at least as stiff as a Graphite Design YS6+

2. Swing speed is not the only determinant. Loading the club and tempo play a factor

3. Your basic shot also matters. If you are a low slicer, your best shaft choice will be different from a high drawer with the same speed.

I have had my ball speed and club head speed measured with the club speed being 100.4 mph and the ball speed being 122.4 and i use a stiff in my driver and swing with a moderate rhythm and usually (touch wood) get good results

Hope this helps

Wow !

You sure those numbers are correct?

What were you hitting, a rock?

I had my swing speed measured (driver and irons) at a Yonex demo. I was asking my pro about stiffer iron shafts but he doubts the iron results,

driver swing speed 93.5, ball speed 135, shaft is regular
av drive is about 230-240
irons swing speed 88,

he doesn't think it possible to swing a 7 in. shorter club only 5 mph slower, so he's going to put me on the clock himself.
