So, in a bid to not let the cold dampen my golfing spirits I managed to get to the range both on Friday and Saturday.

Friday I must admit was a very rushed affair as I had to be somewhere. It was cold and I honestly couldn't feel some of my fingers on my right hand. I had to keep stopping in between shots and the odd shot where I'd catch it so fat the vibrations in the club made my hands throb!!! Anyway, I got some good shots out of it and worked some more on eliminating my initial wrist action to start the backswing, this has practically gone now. Hopefully never to return.

On Saturday I had my first golf lesson over at Belhus Park GC. The guy teaching me is a friend of the family so I got a good price with tokens for around 600 balls thrown in too! Not too shabby! Those on here who have read some of my other posts will know I have a bit of an issue with slicing at the moment. He got me hitting a few balls and after the third one stepped in straight away and changed my grip. It felt awful at first, completely alien but low and behold after about 10 balls they were going much straighter. Some were going left (which I've never done before - signs of the grip working I guess) but the majority were on targert. I can now feel the clubheard coming down a lot squarer(?) on impact.

I had 40 minutes with him and we only really worked on grip and a tiny bit of shoulder alignment. My left shoulder was very open and pointing left of the target. He got me to close this up straight with my right. Again it seemed to help.

To say I'm happy would be an understatement. I now have some checks to do when setting up to the ball and a lot of the guesswork has been taken out of my stance/posture which gives me confidence.

Now, a question if I may (as if I haven't rambled on enough...). My Callaway X-16s... they're great and all and I got them for a great price around a year ago but the grips are looking very worn. I compared them with some new grips in the shop and the difference is night and day. Now, I thought about getting them regripped, but then wondered if the money would be better spent towards a new set of clubs. I know it's early days but my game is improving somewhat and I'm wondering how much these clubs have left to give me. If someone suggests I keep them for another year then fine, I'm not exactly itching to spend a few hundred quid just for the sake of it. The clubs in general are still in great condition, no chips, dents or pitting. As I say it's just the grips that need some attention and trading them in whilst they're still in good condition might be worth it in the long run.

What do people think?

Thanks

David

Keep your clubs for the minute (maybe even long term) and get them regripped it wont cost that much, maybe a fiver a club, and practice with what you have got just now.

Thanks, to be honest I'd already made my mind up. I was just curious as to what others would do. They're great clubs really and perfectly capable.

Are you able to recommend a good grip? I guess it depends on hand size etc? The only ones I've heard of are Golf Pride!

happy for you that you are happy with the result of the lesson David, that confidence you mention will be a massive factor in (1) incentive to stay with the lessons & changes & (2) belief in your own abilty to get better & play better golf ..

As per your question , i think if the pro is a family friend he wont try to UPsell you into something you dont need , if you chat to him & decide new irons are the way to go it might be best to wait for the new irons before you have another lesson ..

Best of luck which ever you decide anyhow & let us know how you get on ..

A Friend of mine who is a pro still uses his x16 there is nothing wrong with them as Chris says get them re gripped or learn to do it yourself it's easy lots of YouTube vids about how.

Grips are a pretty personal thing (seemingly like all of golf stuff ;)) but if you are think about doing it yourself or even for some ideas I use http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/ good selection on there to have a look at although it would be better to go and have a feel of some in a shop :o

Keep the clubs but get the re-gripped. The X16's will do you just fine whilst your getting used to everything and working on your game. I'm sure the shop there will have a few different grips to try so just see which ones you like the feel of and go with them. Ask them to check your grip size though as you may need some extra layers of tape underneath. Now that you've got your grip sorted, you don't want to cause yourself problems with a grip thats the wrong size!

Thank you all for the replies. A unanimous decision to keep the X16s then it seems! :D

Thank you for the advice. It felt great walking away from the range after hitting those shots. Far better than before when I've often walked away with mixed feelings and sometimes a little downhearted. It's a refreshing change.

golfdub - if they're good enough for a +6'er then they're good enough for me I guess!

Doh/chris661 - thanks for the links. I'll check them out. I think I need to get to a shop and 'feel' some as Gareth suggested. The tutor showed me a Golf Pride grip which was extremely tacky, it felt really nice.

Looks like this is the next step for me and my sticks.

Thanks again as always.

Dave

Have you tried washing the grips? They might just be in need of a freshen up

I've washed them after every round. They're very slippery and I think they're causing me to grip slightly harder than necessary. This (I think) then creates more stiffness and tension during my swing.

Grateful for your thoughts on that one bobmac?

Was just going to say the same. Get a bowl of water with washing up liquid and "agitate" til you get some good suds and then wash the grips with the suds (get less wet that way). Quick rinse, then let them dry naturally and it's amazing how they come back all nice and tacky again. It will tell you if they are worn rather than just mucky and full of sweat and grime and all sorts!

If they have been cleaned often and they are slippery, then get them changed.
As has been said already, get your hands checked to ensure you get the right sized grip

Thanks for the reply Amanda,

I'll give them a good going over with just the suds this time and with a better stiff bristled brush. Perhaps last time I didn't make a good enough job of it.

The markings on the grips look very shallow though, like a car tyre losing it's tread. As I said, when I felt this other grip the difference was staggering, it was like it was adhering to my hand almost!
